    Barnes has been very good, with a few notable exceptions. He is a good strikeout pitcher, and I would personally prefer that he be given a shot at closing games over Uehara. Ziegler could be the primary closer, then Barnes.

    Phantom injury I suspect. O'Sullivan's value is pretty low. And someone had to be put on the DL or demoted to make room for Ziegler. I doubt this is a serious injury or even a real one. And apparently ERod is being reactivated: "Michael Silverman ✔ @mikesilvermanbb Eduardo Rodriguez will be activated to start 2nd-half opener in NY @yankees this Friday. Followed by Wright and Price." As for the 19th, we do not need another starter then. Not until the 23rd. And here is what Farrell had to say about it: "Michael Silverman ✔ @mikesilvermanbb Farrell said plan is to have Buchholz in rotation in second half. First start unknown right now, no rush for 5th starter until July 23." Oh goody. Clay Buchholz back in the rotation. Its the sort of thing nightmares are made of.

    ERod's major problem, aside from command, is that he has only two pitches he can throw reliably. As a RP you can get away with that, but not as a starter. He needs to develop a slider or curve that he can command.

    I can understand why DD did this: our bench really stinks and Hill is an improvement that is sorely needed. Still......our bench is not the major issue with this team, and we just gave up a SP with an ERA under 2.5 at AAA ball without even giving him a shot at it in Boston. I think this was a mistake. Yes, Wilkerson could have flopped, but given how bad our #4-5 SPs are he was worth a shot....unless DD has more up his sleeve in terms of addressing the pitching issue.

    There is THAT too. Wilkerson may not have had what it takes to make it in the majors, but his ERA at Pawtucket indicated that he was deserving of a chance before he got shipped away. I hope we don't read the box scores and see that Wilkerson is tossing goose eggs for some other team in the near future.

    Lets say Shaw had just been promoted to the majors. He has had 75 PAs so far and has an overall OPS of .620. Is it then safe to conclude that he is not a good hitter? While its certainly possible that he will need some platoon help v LHP, its far too early to make that conclusion IMO. He will need to approach 200-250 PAs v LHP to make that judgement. Its entirely possible that management will never let him get that many, of course.

    I don't know what his splits were in the minors either. I know that he didn't hit anyone well at Pawtucket: career OPS in AAA ball: .715. He made his jump when he got to the majors. You are right: 85 ABs aren't much larger a sample size than 75 is. The true OPS split is probably somewhere in between the two, but no conclusion can be drawn from either one: I cannot say that Shaw is terrible v LHP....not yet.

    For his career Travis Shaw has an OPS v RHP of .804. Vs LHP his career OPS is .810. What has happened this year IMO is an aberration so far (v LHP OPS of .620) and is based on a small sample size of 75 PAs. Furthermore, Hill is hitting worse v LHP than RHP this year; OPS .725 and v RHP .803. Even for his career the difference is small : .762 v LHP, .741 v RHP. Something else is going down methinks.

    He isn't the whole problem; he isn't even most of the problem. But he IS part of the problem.

    Good post Southpaw. Its pretty clear that while Epstein developed some excellent positional players his record with drafting and developing pitchers was pretty horrible. Same with Cherington. Its going to take Dombrowski more than a year to fix the mess he was left with in terms of SPing.

    Aaron Wilkerson is an option too. He is pitching well at Pawtucket.

    I would have no problem with trying him one more time, but his ERA is over 5 and his WHIP this year in Boston is 2.108, which is awful. At the very least, Rodriguez needs to be sent down to get his act together. This version of him is not going to cut it. Still.....Owens??

    He is apparently their top prospect. Must be nice to have a top prospect who is a pitcher. We have who-Owens? Uggh.

    Farrell made two pretty clear blunders tonight. First, with the score 2-0 and runners on first and second in the third inning, he didn't force Marrero to bunt until he had two strikes on him. Marrero is a terrible hitter. No one was out; a successful bunt could have resulted in runners on second and third with one out with Betts up. Second, in the 8th inning with runners on first and second and no one out, a tough RHP on the mound, and Hanley Ramirez (whose OPS over the past over 100 ABs is well under .600) up, he failed to PH Ortiz when it really mattered, instead saving him for a two out, no one on base, in the ninth scenario. Ramirez struck out. I don't much care that it might have hurt Hanley's feelings. Farrell is not putting his team in the best possible position to win games.

    You don't build a championship team with a group of players who "don't have to improve that much to get to average". I realize you cannot have a team full of above average players, but that should certainly be the goal.

    He has been "scorching the ball" to the tune of .221/.567 for the year and .212/.455 over the last 10 games. With that kind of scorching we sure need to break out the fire extinguisher. Sure he has the potential to hit the ball; so does Castillo. I want performance, not potential. He is good defensively, to be sure, but with those offensive numbers I want a backup plan too. Good thing we have Swihart in the wings.

    First, we don't need an ace. It would be nice, but what we need is a solid #2. Its not going to cost Betts/Bradley/Bogaerts to get that pitcher. We have the parts to obtain Fernandez (if the Marlins are willing to trade him, which I doubt as he still has another year after this year of team control) or another solid #2. Second, Owens-Elias-Johnson-Sullivan are useless appendages. Elias might have a little value; the others guys do not. But Benintendi and a few others could catch the eye of other GMs. Remember: no added pitching=no playoffs. Dombrowski knows this too.

    If I am Rodriguez and I am aware I am tipping my pitches, why not kind of "reverse tip"? In other words, sometimes let the hitter see the thumb of his glove but instead of throwing a fastball, throw an offspeed pitch-especially when you really need a K. Eventually he will need to be less revealing. I don't think its much of a problem though. Remy said as much during his last start. Now that Remy is with O'Brien he is focusing on sharing his great knowledge of the game.

    He is going to get more time. There is no one else better than him right now. What I am saying is that when (if) Swihart returns this year, he should be a catcher, not a LF. Just in case. Atom bombs or not, unless Vasquez produces with the bat he will eventually be sitting a lot more often.

    Stephen Wright. Without him anchoring our top three SPs no amount of offense would have put us where we are right now.

    Swihart needs to be a catcher again when he returns. It is looking more and more like Vasquez is going to remain insipid with a bat in his hands. I am not convinced that Vas is the answer at that position.

    His velocity reached 95 during his last outing. Its not velocity. Its location. And that could be fixed with some changes in his delivery. Remy pointed out four things that are different this year than last year in his delivery, and they have been working with him to get him back to how he threw the ball last year. Furthermore, ERod is not equivocating when asked about how his knee feels: he says its not an issue. I am sure that if its not a physical issue (and I don't think it is), it could well be a mental issue. That will take time to get over. Its too early to judge him. We gave Buchholz 10 starts; ERod deserves the same.
