A Realistic Look at the 2026 Red Sox: Part I
FredLynn replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
I don’t see what we are discussing here-the percentage of revenue spent on player salaries by team. Maybe I missed it. Is it in your link? Or are you trying to change the subject to excuse Henry’s cheapskate behavior….? -

The only information I have is for 2025 during which we were 23rd well behind such powerhouses as the A's and the Royals. Henry sucks as an owner. -

And my point is that when you rank 23rd (or near that) in percentage of revenue spent on player salaries you SHOULD be spending more if you prioritize winning. Obviously Henry doesn't see it that way. He prioritizes profit, money in his voluminous wallet, over winning. Maybe he wanted to win years ago. Its clear that he wants to maximize profit now. Hey-its his team. He can do with it what he wants. But it does a disservice to the loyal fans of the team. We will never win another ring as long as cheapskate Henry owns the team. -

They were better last year than the previous few years. We squeaked into a playoff spot and were promptly eliminated. This year I expected more; its seems I will not get it. Many of the pieces are in place to compete for a ring-we have a solid rotation and a stud in Anthony. But we lost Bregman and gave away Devers (a necessity) and Contreras is not going to compensate for those losses. We will be WORSE offensively, not better. Breslow is wasting a window of opportunity to compete for a ring because he is constrained by Henry's cheapskate limits and because he isn't very good at what he does-other than making excuses. I can't see us finishing better than 3rd in the ALE, likely worse. Its getting old. -

I don't see fortifying the starting rotation and improving the offense as mutually exclusive. A lot of money came off the books when Devers and others left and the fact is that the FLOPS are still LOWER THIRD in percentage of revenue taken in spent on player salaries. Henry is too cheap to give Breslow the green light to improve that flaw and the result is team that likely will not compete for a ring this year. Again. -

We have a very good starting pitching staff. But Breslow has dropped the ball when it comes to offense, probably because Henry told him not to spend enough to make the team competitive. Time is getting late. Spring training is going to start in a few weeks and the team has not sufficiently improved. -

I have to admit that with all due respect to Harmony I really don't give a rats ass what the Mariners are projected to do this year. I am more concerned with the improved ALE and our pedestrian offense. Its Feb 1 tomorrow and the FLOPS still have not addressed the gaping holes in our lineup. I think they might get another product out of the dumpster but basically no one of signifcance-and really, they need TWO good bats to compete for a ring. Henry should have paid Schwarber or Alonso-or at LEAST Bregman plus one other good player. We are left with dregs. Again. -

Contreras is going to help, no doubt. He and Suarez are going to make the team better, but at this point the losses are at least as great as the additions. At the end of the day you MUST be able to score runs to win games.- 382 replies

I was not familiar with Luke Keaschall so I looked him up. He would be perfect but would likely cost an arm and a leg in a trade. OPS+=128. Its not happening......but yes, he would be perfect.- 382 replies

I think that would give us a chance. Anthony really has no protection at all. He is our only consistent threat. Its possible that Abreu or Casas might have a resurgence, but what really had to happen was us getting Schwarber or Alonso. Thats history now. I doubt we will get EITHER Suarez OR Paredes. They'll find another mediocre player followed by another litany of excuses.- 382 replies

As I also said, I have no doubt that we will get SOMEONE to play in the IF, just not someone of sufficient quality to turn us into a contender. We will likely get a rehab project or another dumpster product. By "someone" I meant "someone of significance". I don't count getting bums with "potential" as "someone". You tried to get me to sign on to a sucker bet and were shocked when you discovered that I am not a sucker who felt obliged to adhere to the terms of a wager that YOU set up. So I set up my own wager. You backed out. We need more than Paredes or Suarez. I could live with either one as long as we improve the offense by signing another very good bat. We are WASTING a window the team has. Got the rotation set and a stud OF. Now fill in the rest of the roster.- 382 replies

That pretty much nails it. Our competition in the ALE is much better and we are probably treading water-deeper pitching, almost certainly an anemic offense. Another long season is on the horizon.- 382 replies

I’m happy you are comfortable with your misguided thinking that I was wrong. Did you really think I would fall for a sucker bet?- 382 replies

I don’t think Bregman alone would be enough. That wouldn’t even get us back to baseline. We also lost players like Devers and Refsnyder. Two players like Bregman would do it. Or one player like Schwarber. Anthony needs company. Our rotation is good but it won’t matter if we can’t score runs.- 382 replies

Brady proposed a sucker bet. I made a counter proposal sucker bet. The bottom line is that we need two good bats to compete for a ring this year. I don’t see it. Shoulda got Schwarber or Alonso.- 382 replies

I’d do .780. You know, the kind of player that could make a significant difference. I agree with you: we will make another move. Another dumpster dive. Thats getting old.- 382 replies

Paredes would improve the team but not enough to make us a contender alone. We aren’t going to get anyone that would put us over the top. Those guys were available. We were “interested” in them. But Henry didn’t want to pay them. I’d do the bet Brady proposed for an .800 OPS player. Or two at .780. We’re getting very little. It’s the way they operate.- 382 replies

I don’t know: why do they consistently sign mediocre players when they need upgrades? If we get a player with an average OPS that’s not going to help. We need TWO good bats.- 382 replies

My offer is still out there. I don’t accept your terms because they could trade for more mediocrity and since he isn’t currently on the roster that would fulfill YOUR terms. My terms are much better: I bet they won’t add anyone who would significantly improve our offense (as defined by a career OPS of .820 or better). Deal?- 382 replies

I didn’t decline. I changed the terms to make it relevant. Get some dumpster product and you would still win. Not falling for that. After Brady declines I’ll offer the bet to anyone else here.- 382 replies

I only bet on sure things. Getting “someone” not currently on the roster is irrelevant. What we need is to get someone who will have a major impact on our ability to score runs-someone with a career OPS of .820 or so or better. I’d take that bet. You know-someone like Alonso or Schwarber, the guys Henry was too cheap to pay. Let’s do a small donation to the winners charity, say $100. Deal?- 382 replies

I'd go a step further: I think I can safely say that despite our "interest" in quality players we won't be getting any of them if it hasn't happened by now.- 382 replies

Nope. Not unless you can package one good offensive player with other players and draft picks to get an upgrade. We have too many OF. Who would you trade to make the necessary offensive upgrades? As you know, to get quality we need to give someone significant up. Marte for Hicks isn't an example of that happening.- 382 replies
