I would like to see them both kept for now. I would steer away from Betts and Swihart at his time. I do think that Vasquez has to be given a chance. I think that he turns into a very very good defender and pitch caller. Long leash for him to prove that he can hit just a little - just a little north of .200. Anyone else I would think would serve as fair game to trade for a pitcher like Zimmerman. They go and get a proven young arm, you would never hear a chant from me. I don't really think that anyone really significant would listen to the chants anyway. I hope they wouldn't. Ticket sales dropping might have an effect but talk on a forum - not so much I hope.

I like both Vasquez and Swihart. We have seen a small sample with respect to Vasquez at the ml level. I truly understand the desire to keep them both but if Swihart is as good a catcher as he projects to be, I don't see them together on a future Red Sox team. I don't think you move either one of them at this time but I am wondering (not that it makes any difference ) what their "plan" might be. Good catchers certainly are very valuable and I don't see Swihart moving to first or dh ing .

I would certainly keep Betts. As for Swihart and Owens - I don't know. Soon there will be no room at the top for some position players if the sox do not make a move. I doubt seriously that we ever see Vasquez and Swihart together. It just doesn't seem to make any sense. As for Owens - if he was the centerpiece that brought Zimmerman to Boston, that I would do. One proven one not. Scherzer gone. I still am holding out hope. I don't understand why you would spend the kind of $ the Sox have so far on 2 position players and still not bring in the best pitcher that you can. A balance is necessary for sure but it is top quality pitching and defense first for me I guess.

think I will. I wasn't really thinking about because i hate the traffic but I am a little excited. I will be even more excited with just one more signing. -
I'll preface this by saying that from a point of understanding most things financial, I am able to pay my own bills and that is about it. I do not understand the technicalities of much of the high contract discussion. If I was paying those bills I probably would. I actually think that I will learn things from following this discussion board. I am thinking that Shields may go to someone for less than $100,000,000 (hurt me putting in all those zeroes ). Do you think that Scherzer will wind up with a contract worth more than what Detroit's offer was or does he go back to Detroit? I would love to see him in Boston but a signing of either one or possibly someone else I think sends a clear message that not only is this team looking to win this year but for years to come.

I think that it is very odd that one or both of these guys have not already been signed. January 18th seems a little late for these types of signings. I am going to guess that there is a lot of stuff going on that we don't hear anything about. Not even a whisper. Doesn't really appear that there are many teams out there willing to pay the big bucks for longer term deals for either of them. I hope the Sox are in the hunt. I prefer one to Hamels.

A little redundant on my part but I think that a Sherzer signing, although painful monetarily, could secure this team's future for a number of years. A fairly young talented pitching staff with some good young arms having time to develop.

You are right there. Have to look at guys like Holt under a different microscope. I think the Sox have done a good job recently of recognizing value in players like him. A poor attitude and clubhouse disruption doesn't tend to stick around in boston very long. that is the way it should be.

Being a team player and being coachable at any level are valued attributes in athletes. I am sure that people that play against Pedroia probably do think that he is a bit arrogant. We just consider him a winner. It's ok to have a little chip on your shoulder and he proves that you can still be a decent person. The Sox have a taken a few chances in the past. Some have worked - others have not. The toughest and best athletes that I ever worked with with good humans. During a contest, you never really knew what they were thinking because they were able stay focused on the job and did not react to anything that came toward them from the outside. The good ones know that it isn't all about them.

I am very excited about this team. I don't think that it is the typical excitement that I feel every year. They are young almost across the board. They appear to be very talented. Just a couple more moves and they might take me well into my old age. I think that they are on the threshold of being as good as they have ever been. I might buy those tickets after all. I might also even slide on over to Ft. Myers if I can get out of New England.

It's an opportunity that does not come along all that often. #1-you have already strengthened your team #2-you have a number of very tradeable players - They won't all go to Pawtucket #3-you have the money to sign the player that could be a major difference maker. It is an important time I think for the franchise. It really looks like they are close to putting a team on the field that could be very good for a long time. The potential is there to end all discussion of whether or not they will compete every year. I think that we will learn a lot about this organization over the next few days, weeks, or months.

Someone is going to pony up the big bucks pretty soon. If it were to be the Sox, based around the moves they have already made, could be a very powerful team for a long time.

Does look like the Phils are going to have to require a bit less than they want if they are going to move Hamels. I think that you are right. Sox are waiting for the right deal before they pull the trigger. I think that we deal from a very strong position this time around. Scherzer would be the real find for me I guess. Personally I might even prefer Shields to Hamels. you are going to pay either way. Hamels costs you people as well.

I really wasn't surprised with the Stephen Drew situation and resolution. Scherzer probably wants more than he will get but to me it seems odd and not easily understandable why there hasn't been more action. Not everyone will want to wait until 2016 to pick a winner. How long before collusion starts being discussed. Someone is going to wind up with a great pitcher. It's an interesting story.

I am curious to see if he (jbj) fits into their plans. No longer is it his position to lose. He is going to have to win it. I like the kid but I would be surprised to see him in Fenway when the season begins.

One sad aspect of this story is that if you want to remain strong year in and year out and you have $, you probably won't be as patient with your young prospects as some other teams. At some point in time a decision has to be made. In Bradley's case it might come very soon.

I hope that that is what most people interpreted the meaning of the concept of a bridge year as being. I also never felt that it was a "throwaway year". The issue becomes one of have those younger players allowed us to cross the bridge. If people think that they have - great. If they haven't, how much time do you give them? I think most of us would like to see Bradley getting it done as predicted in centerfield. I am not sure management sees it the same way. 127 games is probably close to their limit. I would like to see him in Boston but if he winds up somewhere else and produces - good for him.

I am pulling for jackie. I hope that he has a great spring and proves that he can hit major league pitching. So far he hasn't proven that he can. It will he his job to win not to lose this year. If he hits, he will be a great addition.

You aren't wrong, we just don't get do overs as a rule. As good a player as Mookie Betts projects to be, I am willing to bet that even the people who scouted and signed him are a little surprised that he projects as an outfielder. They obviously signed a great athlete. I hope that the Sox don't sell low on JBJ. To this point he quite obviously has not shown that he can hit major league pitching . Still tough to give up on one of the better centerfielders in the game.

I agree with you . I think that the people who do the evaluating for this organization have done a good job. Certainly a job that I wouldn't and couldn't do. Reality just seems to say that they aren't doing a better job than any number of other organizations. You kind of roll the dice until they make the leap to the big club.

Well thank you for that Point being that there might be some other pretty good farm systems out there. It might be possible that they produce players equally as talented as the Red Sox have.
