  1. A good point for sure. I just still wonder about the current thinking. They have stockpiled enough players to field two teams. If the right move was there right now, I would like to see them make it. Emphasis on the right move for the team in general.
  2. I agree. It is the length of the season and the effects on a pitching and coaching staff that bother s me.
  3. You are right. Expanded playoffs have certainly made people very rich but the approach to the game in general is very different in this era. It is almost like two separate seasons. Magnified expansion hasn't worked real well for me but it is what it is. Don't think we are going backward anytime soon.
  4. Interesting article. I too would hope that Betts is untouchable. Trying to figure out the recent spate of infatuation with Rusney Castillo and Hanley Ramirez befuddles me. i don't get it but whatever right. On a more POSITIVE note though, I like a bounce back year out of Victorino. I hope that Ramirez adapts to left and shuts his mouth. I hope that Castillo becomes the player, that based on something, people think he can become. It could be exciting to see. Can't wait for it to start.
  5. Very good point - depends on the cost. If the cost was players (meaning Betts), I would probably say no. Combination of practically any of the rest of them within reason of course might be ok with me. The concept of waiting until later on is not bad either.
  6. I truly hope that they are not done with respect to the search and I do mean search for a top of the rotation guy. The current shape of the American league east should not dictate what this team does to create the best rotation that they can create. I think that a good job has been done so far, if the wheels are still turning in an attempt to reel in a "stopper". Something that every championship team needs.
  7. Wow - Now you do back farther than I do and I don't give a good goddam about what anyone thinks about how I feel about the games in general. I do know that "our " OLD ways do in fact work. Some would say that our old ways wouldn"t work today. Sorry but they are wrong. I still love the games but with ridiculous salaries paid out to players of marginal abilities - millions - things have changed for sure. Dick Williams benched Yaz. in 1967. He dealt with it got over it and had what I still consider to be the greatest season any player has had since I have been alive. It is just called being coached. Our last World Series team accomplished more than any in history. No fools just a bunch of coachable winners. Newcombe I do remember the rest just from hearing about them. Fred - I won't apologize to anyone again for liking your posts again. A good dose of the past when do all some good. Keep it coming!
  8. just a pet peeve but it is it absolutely necessary to stick with the script. A relief pitcher eases his way through the 7th but is replaced by the "setup" man who strikes out the side but must give way to a "closer". 95% of the time this happens. Is the concept of I just want to win, become secondary to specialization? I am refreshed when I see a starting pitcher willing to work out of the bullpen when the situation calls for it.
  9. Agree! if Renaudo had not had the surgery that he had, the Red Sox would never have had a shot at him. At the college level, he was as good as you could get. I also like Kelly.
  10. He could not pry Rodriguez out of my hands. The other two plus - in a heartbeat.
  11. Those 3 and any other 2 would work for me.
  12. How about Seaver, Koosman, and Ryan?
  13. Gotcha - I will behave.
  14. Just old guys sticking together.
  15. Your posts are a delight to read. I might not always agree but do think about what you say. Plenty of humor in there as well. Keep them coming. Just got off the golf course myself.
  16. I do like the Sandoval signing. Fills a gap the right way in my opinion. This is an opinion board - correct? I like reading yours. Occasionally they make sense to me. As for me saying anything that could be taken as a personal affront, won't happen. Not my style. You want to take shots at me - feel free. I just retired as a fairly successful basketball coach after 44 years. Seen, heard it, done it once or twice before. I also believe that it is possible to win with good people. I am glad Manny could hit but in essence he was a cheater and a buffoon. I am in hopes that Hanley R. will not repeat his stupidity. I guess we were fortunate in some ways that we had Manny on our side. He could not have survived in an environment where he actually had to be coached.
  17. Oh for God's sake, that is not being whiny. That is being from New England. It is a Red Sox thing. Positive - Let me see - I like Sandoval at third base. I was a history teacher so I like the fact that it repeats itself - Ramirez for Ramirez in left? I will definitely be positive if he stays healthy and hits.
  18. Interesting! Based on If they both develop accordingly, I might still consider a move for a real arm.
  19. I agree. I like Joe Kelly as much as anybody that that they have right now.
  20. I really like the positivity but if those 2 guys both get 13 to 15 wins and have ERA's under 4, I would be stunned. If I was a betting man, sorry but I would bet against that one. As for Masterson, I hope he can relocate the 3 mph that he lost or that ball won't be sinking. I'm trying to believe in all this but I don't know.
  21. Vazquez this year for sure. A great defensive catcher. If Swihart becomes what we think he could become, there is no way that they both ultimately stay in Boston. Would make absolutely no sense. It's a good problem to have though. Think about the best catchers we have had then think about their backups. You want one of these two guys going every 4th or 5th day? Not likely. It will be interesting to see if we have over rated another "potential" player.
  22. Cespedes has been adequately replaced by an equal malcontent - Hanley Ramirez. Same guy that played in Portland all those years ago. Hope he hits!
  23. We got better but no way is that staff quality. Porcello is maybe a good 2 . the rest - a bunch of 3.4 and 5's no matter what spin you give it. It's all just a guess. I like Renaudo and Kelley every bit as much as Miley and Masterson. No big additions there. Quote all the stats you like . It aint there boys. For all who think that giving up Cespedes will help in the clubhouse, we still got Hanley. He is the same head case today that he was 10 years ago. They will be more interesting to watch but without at least one stopper, there isn't enough there. Might get us out of the cellar though.
  24. I agree. I just am reluctant to trade power arms but in this case maybe it was the right call. I would trade the X man in a heartbeat. I think that he may become a decent hitter but if he is our future ss that is not good. He may get better but at his best he is average defensively. Our current catching position may become another area to look at in the future. If Switheart is as good as he projects to be, there will not be room for 2 catchers of the quality that it looks like we might have. There are plenty of options to throw out there to get the arm that we need.
  25. Oh thank you. I do act a lot younger than I am.
