  1. When I was a bit younger and in dating mode, what teams someone cheered for was not part of my criteria for dating. I was too damned shallow I guess.
  2. Is she related to Putin? Don't piss her off, you'll have the latest version of the Russian KGB after you.
  3. I know - I am just being unrealistically sarcastic. No need for that amongst this group right? With this pitching staff, it probably doesn't make one bit of difference who pitches or when they pitch.
  4. Oh man - we are old timers aren't we. I bet we all remember where we were and what we were doing the night that Tony C. got beaned. Sadly it seems like just yesterday.
  5. Since some fans think that he is the "Ace" of this staff, maybe he should pitch the first two or three games.
  6. Maybe they could just lend Harvey to us for a little while.
  7. Oh man - I felt bad for him. they timed Vada Pinson in under 4 going down the first base line. He could have been on second before Cepeda got to first.
  8. I almost cried watching Cepada try to get out of the batter's box after pounding one off the wall. Tired old knees. He played on some great Giants teams.
  9. Knowing that you are more than solid behind the plate is comforting. Finally a guy that could actually throw runners out as well. But, losing him is more of a loss for him than for the Sox. Is he replaceable, I think so. Much more so than Fisk.
  10. It really isn't anything I worry about but i do see it as a priviledge that is earned. I wonder how many teams don't start what they consider to be their best pitcher on opening day? I'm sure that could be looked up but no thanks. Maybe it is just his jewelry choice that bugs me. I don't know. Oh well - stock futures are down - I am a little worried about the market. Much more so than I am about who opens for the Sox.
  11. Takes me back to the fall of 1972. The last pitcher to get a hit before the American League initiated the DH was from Auburn, Maine - Larry Gowell- a true power pitcher. My sophomore year in HS (1967) we were scheduled to face him. The game got rained out. I was not disappointed.
  12. A semantics master I see. Collapse of American society. Good one. I got nothing against Buccholtz. An excellent choice for the 4th game of the season. I'd rather see Sergeant Schultz pitch on opening day than him. But since it doesn't matter - it's all good.
  13. Well - let's see- maybe some teams start what they feel is their best pitcher on opening day. Maybe because they would like to see their team have as good a chance to win their opener no matter how insignificant it might seem to some. Maybe because almost everyone who follows the game expects that a team's best pitcher will go on opening day. Maybe you think the Sox might "fake em out" and steal one. There might even still be a few people who believe that you still have to earn your way in the world and no matter how insignificant it might seem to some others might see this as a reward for work well done. Porcello has earned the right but hey lets try to make Buccholtz feel good about himself. Buccholtz - leading the way - really? It is an important day to me but clearly mine is a minority fan's opinion. Buccholtz - wow - I hope that he pitches well. Him getting this particular start certainly proves that all things are possible and you don't even have to earn them. The new American way!
  14. A Mechanic's helper is what you need.
  15. No one likes it when a plan gets screwed up but I don't see losing Vasquez as a devastating blow to the Red Sox. I feel badly for the kid. Outstanding defensive catcher - all the tools that you could ask for. Totally unproven at the plate - just like Swihart. If both were healthy, in one year I don't think that they both would have been playing for the Sox anyway.
  16. It is sad to say but Buccholtz's last start was one of the best he has had this spring. Outside of a couple of mistakes he could have been easily mistaken for a middle of the rotation kind of guy. That's about as good as we can expect from him. It doesn't look as though much is decided these days just based on merit. I do not care about how Buccholtz feels. Porcello earned the right to be first up! I think that the extra necklace Buccholtz is wearing is holding him back.
  17. The value of a better than good catcher is unargueable going forward. He is unproven in some areas but in the ones that count the most he could be superb. I think that his impact will be felt more greatly when we have a pitching staff that can stay healthy and get people out on a regular basis.
  18. No one will ever question the importance of the catching position. I think that Hanigan and anybody provides adequate backup for Vasquez. I don't know any better than anyone else whether Swihart is going to be ready or not but based on the fact that he is "untradeable" someone must think that he is damn close. I place great value on Vasquez and his future but I also think that in many ways he is as unproven as any of the other youngsters on this team. His effect on a young pitching staff going forward might be great but with the starting 5 that we currently have, I don't think so much.
  19. Vasquez being injured is a blow for sure but the worst thing that could have happened to the team this spring. Super young catcher with a promising future but the worst thing that could have happened? It's a test of depth but I think it is a matter of opinion whether or not it is the worst thing that could have happened to this team. I'm not for shoving young players into the bigs before they are ready but with the incredible hype surrounding Swihart, I guess I figure if he gets a shot I'm ok with it. If he is untradeable, I think that he is playable.
  20. If Victorino can go, he won't be splitting time with anybody. If he can't go, he'll go on the dl. That is the only way Castillo gets a shot early.
  21. I also would like to see Betts at second base at some point in his career but only when Pedroia gives it up or can't get it done. Right now he can. I think that Betts will become an above average outfielder as he continues to learn the position. If Bradley had become the player we all thought he would become, I might look at this differently. With Victorino's health history, I think as many others do that you keep Betts right where he is. I also do not think that Pedroais's trade value is particularly high. Everybody is trying to get younger.
  22. Glad I could finally get something going here. I'll say it again - He looked better today then he did in his last outing. He ain't no ace. A solid middle of the rotation guy if healthy. Sure, he will tease us now and then but that is what he is. Sadly, outside of Porcello, we got nothing better. On the farm - Maybe Rodriguez maybe not. Owens, Johnson, Wright? That is one of the reasons why I would keep Barnes working as a starter.
  23. You might be right. I should have said anyone not named Betts. that one I will stick to.
  24. I know you weren't attacking me. It does seem strange to me that all of the positive pundits who have been criticizing anyone who has even hinted that this pitching staff in general does look like it sucks have not come after you. I actually tend to lean in your direction but I haven't been able to get away with questioning any of their moves. Truthfully if I thought Owens and maybe other not named Swihart or Betts would get us Hamels, I would be tempted to pull the trigger.
