  1. Actually I have found much of the whole debate dealing with the role sabermetrics play to be just something to fill a void between swinging a golf club. No one doubts the valuable role using the data gathered from them plays. The debate is over to what extent. Things just go round and round. I find the game threads to be very refreshing and a hell of a lot more real than how many runs a great catcher who can't hit a lick saves for his team over the course of a season. The beauty of any forum I think is that if you don't like it then don't play. I don't need everything to be provable in my life so I actually enjoy some of these debates. They are a lot more real to me than some of this other crap that gets tossed around.
  2. Into survival mode for someone your age. No internet!
  3. Nice shot of Craig's back in the dugout.
  4. i might stop. Nice serve
  5. Castillo 3 hits tonight - 2 RRI's JBJ - 3 for 5
  6. I truly do understand what you are saying. I hope that you understand why I feel as i do. I honestly believe that there individuals that perform better than others when the lights get brightest and the pressure is on. I'm not sure that you can measure it but I know that there are people out there who are able to do things that others can't do in certain situations. Two players that seem to have similar abilities. I don't consider it a fan's term. Coaches use it , players use it. They know it exists. Thankfully and I mean that sincerely, inspite of what some might suggest , everything is not predictable. Things happen all around us all the time for which there are no answers to the question why. I believe in data and i believe in statististics and I know that there are a few special athletes who get things done in pressure situations better than others. I am extremely happy that this great game isn't quite as robotic as some would suggest.
  7. Chili Davis called David Ortiz a clutch hitter. That is good enough for me. Anyone who has ever played any sport absolutely knows that clutch players live. I like you believe that the use of sabermetrics is very valuable but there is a lot more to it than what the computer spits out.
  8. You know what iortiz, I think that every one of them is overpaid. They just won't listen to me though. Most of us are just trying to get along. Maybe even try to understand the importance of the use of metrics when it comes to the game. Once again - this is just my opinion - I bet a large number of the players who play the game do not care about such things and would not understand the data if given to them. It's a stupid financial world we live in and the Red Sox are just as stupid as everybody else. They are intelligent enough to know what they were getting for their investment. The amount of money is no big deal to them.
  9. As an aside from the Porcello controversy here, Masterson did hit 90mph once last night. Who were those guys he was pitching to anyway? Without actually seeing him pitch, it is hard for me to judge his performance. On the computer, it looked pretty good. It did look as though he left a few pitches up which could cost him greatly when he faces a team that can hit. hope he gets stronger as we go along. Regardless of what the game stats said from Buccholtz's last spring training start, I still saw it as an improvement for him over his previous ones. I saw the game. He made a couple of mistakes that cost him. On opening day, he built on that start. I was impressed without his ability to maintain his fastball velocity throughout the course of the game. Those extra mph's make his change up a deadly pitch. Hope he stays healthy.
  10. Whether Porcello becomes what appears to be an over paid starter remains to be seen. Whatever the market dictates for starting pitching of any type will determine that. Signing a solid middle of the rotation starter with potential upside was a good thing. Since I don't think the money is a big issue for this team, for them I think that it was a good sign. Personally, my opinion is I would not pay that kind of money for a pitcher who relies on the play of his defense to the extent that Porcello does. I am one of those old fashioned traditionalists people like to talk about. I still prefer the good old fashioned power arm. My big dollars would be going to the big dogs.
  11. Johnson pitched well tonight - Castillo had a couple of hits.
  12. Could they have been serious? Is Sandoval really that numb? If a "healthy" Mickey Mantle came through that door, Mookie Betts would still be our centerfielder. Maybe he meant the Mick was coming back in his current state.
  13. Like you Fred, I am not a fan of Wrights. If he gets the chance, I hope that he proves me wrong but I don't see a Tim Wakefield reincarnate there. Maybe but I just don't see it yet. As for our youngsters, anybodies guess is no better than any one elses. Owens- Rodriguez - johnson - Barnes - maybe one of them makes it maybe not. So Porcello, Miley, Buccholtz are under team control for a few years. At some point, I see them going after the best young free agent available and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they also traded some of our youngins even if they are pitchers if they can get another highly quality proven major league arm.
  14. I am fairly certain that they go through this process before laying out the loot so to speak. I think that it looks good and may make many of the financial decisions look as though they are actually justifiable but as you kind of said - When the rubber hits the road they probably are going to make a play for whoever they really want regardless of the budget - the luxury tax - or what might look to some as simple common sense. They certainly are addressing needs with their signings but the money spent certainly doesn't look like a major issue . I think that it is a good time to be a Red Sox fan.
  15. Makes sense don't you think - youth vs old. If they are able to sign the best young free agent pitcher on the market within the next year or two I don't think that they will see 189 million as something standing in their way. I would never suggest what they might spend in the majority of years but I do think that they are proving that they are willing to spend whatever it takes. That is my opinion. Yours seems to be that they are using some financial common sense when it comes their signings. We don't agree on this one. That 's ok - might guess is that you are as happy as I am that you a Red Sox fan.
  16. I think that you are right- their spending is more of a choice than what a normal human would call a budget. The signing of Porcello really should come as no surprise. 20 mil. maybe a little too much. We will have to wait and see about this one. I think that it is common logic and not common sense that they would do what they could do to sign a healthy 26 year old who stands a chance to pitch a lot of innings. I don't think that this signing will limit them at all when it comes to signing the best of they young ones coming on the market next year.
  17. What do you think their budget limitations might be? I think that they of course have some sort of budget. You and I can't imagine what it might be though. Let me say again that I am happy to be a Red Sox fan but if you think that there is some sort of spending restraint being shown I guess that is your opinion. I don't care what they do really with their money but personally I think that there will be bigger fish to come that they will be going after. They will win and if it takes money to do it they have shown a great deal more willingness to do it than I ever thought they would.
  18. I agree with you. They have the money to throw around and they are doing it I guess. I've tried to figure out what they are doing and for sure I can't. I think that their plan is to win, and money spent I don't think is a big factor. I like their deals over all but I don't think that they are outsmarting anyone. I think they see something they want and they are willing to spend for it. i did like Porcello's comments about the red Sox work ethic. I am a big Brian Butterfield fan. Personally, I think that it is a good time to be a Sox fan. Looks like they are operating on the "if you can't beat them join them theory." There might be some who think that they are done spending. I think that if they feel a need they will spend.
  19. Given the $ that they have been throwing around, i don't see how you can say that they won't be in play for the top free agent pitchers on the market next year. If the youngsters don't come along quickly, I think that they absolutely will. Buccholtz pitched a beauty yesterday but i wonder whether he would have been willing to trade places with Porcello. Let's see - pitch opening day or sign a 4 year extension for 20 huge ones per year. He got a feel good start and did a super job with it.
  20. For you folks that think they have some type of budget that they are running this franchise by, well I wish I had their budget. Good for Rick Porcello. If nothing else he has proven to me that he is a bright young man.
  21. Bottom line for me is that if the Sox see what they want they get it. Right or wrong - they appear to not be limited by budgetary restrictions at all. i like Porcello and I hope that this signing works out for them. I'm not worried about it though. If it doesn't somebody else will be coming in. If they had wanted Lester badly enough' he would have been pitching for the Sox yesterday.
  22. C'Mon - give me some lets trade Pedroia ******** now
  23. take back everything bad I said about buccholtz
  24. That is interesting. It would also be interesting to know how a pitcher's ability to keep runners close affects a catcher's throwing stats. It would seem to make some sense that if a pitcher held runners close and they still tried to advance a catcher might have a higher caught stealing % if he had any arm at all. Obviously pitching to the plate is number 1 on the list but clearly some hold runners closer than others.
  25. In terms of where you are rating your catcher's abilities, I agree that having that strong arm does not rank at the top. I also don't think that the human element can be ignored either with respect to what an umpire's strike zone is. They aren't all the same. There are probably catcher's that do a better job framing the corners than they do with the top and bottom of the strike zone. How technical does it get?
