  1. Very good outing for Owens yesterday. Bradley, Brentz, Marrero, and Castillo tearing it up early. Swihart not so much just yet.
  2. That's ok. I'm not really what you would call touchy feely. I missed it when you said something that had anything to do with baseball.
  3. I am sensitive. You obviously aren't stupid. Add something moron. I'm sensitive but fairly tough.
  4. Who in the hell are you you repulsive little puke? Do you ever add anything that even remotely relates to baseball or is this just your little way of playing some kind of queer little game? Your posts are nothing but direct attacks . I can live with someone who criticizes me if they are talking baseball. You do not. You are a hater. Baseball??? I know that Fred doesn't need me to back him up but you add nothing. All that you have done is criticize? Baseball?
  5. Well thank you. i really try to understand the direction that people are coming from with some of these posts. I appreciate the passion expressed because without some of that you got nothing! Baseball to me is as much about the stories told as anything these days and I have heard some beauts lately. I have a friend here who saw Ted and Mickey Vernon play. The two best left handed swings he ever saw. Another who worked for the Sox and was in their dugout for 20 years. His first was in 1975. His stories are priceless. Today we talked about things measured by statistics and things that are not. He was a people person on the frontline so you can imagine the direction that he comes from. The history, traditions, and the stories are what make the game for me.
  6. It's been a lot of fun actually. I am impressed with the game threads. I don't consider myself a casual fan but I definitely am compared to some people who are active on this site.
  7. Steven Wright has lived for a game like this. Everyone fouled out and the equipment manager forgot his uniform.
  8. Actually I have found much of the whole debate dealing with the role sabermetrics play to be just something to fill a void between swinging a golf club. No one doubts the valuable role using the data gathered from them plays. The debate is over to what extent. Things just go round and round. I find the game threads to be very refreshing and a hell of a lot more real than how many runs a great catcher who can't hit a lick saves for his team over the course of a season. The beauty of any forum I think is that if you don't like it then don't play. I don't need everything to be provable in my life so I actually enjoy some of these debates. They are a lot more real to me than some of this other crap that gets tossed around.
  9. Into survival mode for someone your age. No internet!
  10. Nice shot of Craig's back in the dugout.
  11. i might stop. Nice serve
  12. Castillo 3 hits tonight - 2 RRI's JBJ - 3 for 5
  13. I truly do understand what you are saying. I hope that you understand why I feel as i do. I honestly believe that there individuals that perform better than others when the lights get brightest and the pressure is on. I'm not sure that you can measure it but I know that there are people out there who are able to do things that others can't do in certain situations. Two players that seem to have similar abilities. I don't consider it a fan's term. Coaches use it , players use it. They know it exists. Thankfully and I mean that sincerely, inspite of what some might suggest , everything is not predictable. Things happen all around us all the time for which there are no answers to the question why. I believe in data and i believe in statististics and I know that there are a few special athletes who get things done in pressure situations better than others. I am extremely happy that this great game isn't quite as robotic as some would suggest.
  14. Chili Davis called David Ortiz a clutch hitter. That is good enough for me. Anyone who has ever played any sport absolutely knows that clutch players live. I like you believe that the use of sabermetrics is very valuable but there is a lot more to it than what the computer spits out.
  15. You know what iortiz, I think that every one of them is overpaid. They just won't listen to me though. Most of us are just trying to get along. Maybe even try to understand the importance of the use of metrics when it comes to the game. Once again - this is just my opinion - I bet a large number of the players who play the game do not care about such things and would not understand the data if given to them. It's a stupid financial world we live in and the Red Sox are just as stupid as everybody else. They are intelligent enough to know what they were getting for their investment. The amount of money is no big deal to them.
  16. As an aside from the Porcello controversy here, Masterson did hit 90mph once last night. Who were those guys he was pitching to anyway? Without actually seeing him pitch, it is hard for me to judge his performance. On the computer, it looked pretty good. It did look as though he left a few pitches up which could cost him greatly when he faces a team that can hit. hope he gets stronger as we go along. Regardless of what the game stats said from Buccholtz's last spring training start, I still saw it as an improvement for him over his previous ones. I saw the game. He made a couple of mistakes that cost him. On opening day, he built on that start. I was impressed without his ability to maintain his fastball velocity throughout the course of the game. Those extra mph's make his change up a deadly pitch. Hope he stays healthy.
  17. Whether Porcello becomes what appears to be an over paid starter remains to be seen. Whatever the market dictates for starting pitching of any type will determine that. Signing a solid middle of the rotation starter with potential upside was a good thing. Since I don't think the money is a big issue for this team, for them I think that it was a good sign. Personally, my opinion is I would not pay that kind of money for a pitcher who relies on the play of his defense to the extent that Porcello does. I am one of those old fashioned traditionalists people like to talk about. I still prefer the good old fashioned power arm. My big dollars would be going to the big dogs.
  18. Johnson pitched well tonight - Castillo had a couple of hits.
  19. Could they have been serious? Is Sandoval really that numb? If a "healthy" Mickey Mantle came through that door, Mookie Betts would still be our centerfielder. Maybe he meant the Mick was coming back in his current state.
  20. Like you Fred, I am not a fan of Wrights. If he gets the chance, I hope that he proves me wrong but I don't see a Tim Wakefield reincarnate there. Maybe but I just don't see it yet. As for our youngsters, anybodies guess is no better than any one elses. Owens- Rodriguez - johnson - Barnes - maybe one of them makes it maybe not. So Porcello, Miley, Buccholtz are under team control for a few years. At some point, I see them going after the best young free agent available and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they also traded some of our youngins even if they are pitchers if they can get another highly quality proven major league arm.
  21. I am fairly certain that they go through this process before laying out the loot so to speak. I think that it looks good and may make many of the financial decisions look as though they are actually justifiable but as you kind of said - When the rubber hits the road they probably are going to make a play for whoever they really want regardless of the budget - the luxury tax - or what might look to some as simple common sense. They certainly are addressing needs with their signings but the money spent certainly doesn't look like a major issue . I think that it is a good time to be a Red Sox fan.
  22. Makes sense don't you think - youth vs old. If they are able to sign the best young free agent pitcher on the market within the next year or two I don't think that they will see 189 million as something standing in their way. I would never suggest what they might spend in the majority of years but I do think that they are proving that they are willing to spend whatever it takes. That is my opinion. Yours seems to be that they are using some financial common sense when it comes their signings. We don't agree on this one. That 's ok - might guess is that you are as happy as I am that you a Red Sox fan.
