  1. There have been and always will be a time to use a bunt to move runners over as well as a bunt for a base hit. What troubles me is that in today’s game there seems to be a plan laid and adhered to before a pitch is made. You have to have a plan but spontaneity still is a good thing. For instance, if the metrics say don’t challenge a fielders arm, the game is on the line maybe you do. I absolutely believe in using all the information you can to plan but sometimes it is a good thing to just follow your gut.
  2. Narvaez has had a great season. I think that in terms of what you have done for me lately, in my mind he tops the list of all of our rookies. Like many here, I’m a huge proponent of the solid up the middle approach and that begins with the guy behind the plate. He has been outstanding.
  3. I try to be a little careful when I post here because I know many of my limitations. I am absolutely not immersed in analytical metrics. I do rely on such things as the box scores to tell me a story often. My eyes are still very good so I do rely on my eye test to help me. I’m very surprised that anyone who has watched Mayer play doesn’t think that he is an above average fielder. Better than Campbell at this time - of course - no big deal Campbell will be fine in time. Now is Mayer quick enough to become an all-star ss - I don’t know - maybe maybe not. I hope that he can become injury free some day because I want to see him in our infield.
  4. It’s worth a shot. Maybe he recaptures some prior magic. He is a solid defender.
  5. I hope the Sox hitting instructors will do just that. Hit the pitch where it is thrown. Doesn’t need to try to lift and pull everything. The power will come. Line drives all over the ballpark. Some in and some out works just fine.
  6. A shame - hope it solves the problem for him.
  7. Mayor’s injury history is a concern. I hope we get a chance to see what he can do over a long stretch of staying healthy. His glove for sure is and has been major league ready for sometime. I think that his bat will come along as well but it’s tougth when he can’t stay on the field. Outside of Anthony, Dobbins was next up for me. He looked so good when he first came up. He’s got a real live arm and just looked like a mature young pitcher. We won’t see him for awhile now. I hope he comes back strong.
  8. Couple of things really stood out to me last night. Maybe I just started paying attention. Buehler’s pitching for one - who would have thunk it. This is a team that is filled with real athletes from top to bottom. Physically it just looks like a team that is very fit. Great team speed. I was happy to see one of my favorites Connor Wong getting it done last night. Good for him.
  9. Got to kind of keep the faith don’t you! It was a great performance by him last night. Actually a great performance by all of them.
  10. Maybe - I really would like to see him back.
  11. Bring back Golitto please. Bergman for sure and while you’re at it Chapman as well.
  12. I’ve heard some of what you mention here. I agree. Let him do what he does best.
  13. Bergman forever - I just dream about him and Varitek working together some day. Giolito for two and one year extension for Chapman. I think your reasoning with respect to Abreau is on right on. As much as I like Mayer, His injury history concerns me too. Tolle might be the next one up. I’m not surprised that Mayer had the injection and really wants to get back this year. Who wouldn’t. This is a special group. I want it duly noted that I am sitting here thinking real good thoughts about what Breslow and the management team is doing. Rafaela, Bello, Crochet, Anthony, Campbell. Anybody else I’m, missing here? I think that they are getting out in front of a trend that will keep them competitive for years to come. It also satisfies a need that some long time fans like me need - I want players who I know are coming back year after year.
  14. Best news I’ve heard today. He seems like he really does love it here. Great long term sign. Next up Bregman, followed by Giolitto and then Chapman on my wish list. A few little tweaks here and there and this team will compete for quite some time. Get me in to old age. Like to see a for real power hitting first baseman brought in as well as one more real quality arm. Not too much to ask. Put them together with what we now have and let the good times roll.
  15. Now you see where I’m going with this. I have no clue what -DRS or -5OAA might mean. What do they mean by the way?
  16. I really don’t have any idea about his defense. If he was an adequate ss and he is terrible at second base, that would be very unusual. Now listen, that is not a comment about Grissom just a perception people and maybe statistics show in general. There is no question that ss as a position is tougher to play. There are obviously some differences but making the transition from short to second should not be a big deal. The other way, not so much. This once again has nothing really to do with any individual. I’m a lay person who just finds some of the decisions made by this management team to be confusing. Obviously they are pushing the right buttons. Grissom just like every one of his teammates is an outstanding baseball player. Good enough - apparently not but they don’t get to the level they are at unless they are pretty special.
  17. I agree. I’m not that guy beating the drum for the Grissoms of the world. There is no reason for him to be on a team in contention. That being said I still find some of the decisions made by management a little confusing. Maybe that’s because I don’t do a deep dive into available information to determine every player’s worth. I’m a fan who does rely on box scores to get much of my information. I’m honestly ok with that. I just love watching the game. Actually I don’t think that I’ve ever seen Grissom play. I don’t happen to think he is some slouch who just rolled off the couch though. He is a young professional athlete who looks as though he is having a decent year. I hope that he like many of his teammates continues to enjoy his ride.
  18. hey I’m ok with whatever they do with anybody right now for sure and I do like David Hamilton but outside of his speed I haven’t really seen much to make me think he is all that valuable a piece. It is obvious I guess that Grissom isn’t a fit in the system. They should unload him somehow for his sake. It’s interesting to me that we have a number of posters who have been ready to ship Connor Wong off to a secluded island somewhere in exile while still applauding the fact that we have a David Hamilton playing second base for us every now and then. Connor Wong is a far more valuable piece of this puzzle than David Hamilton . Not a knock on Hamilton at all. He is doing his job.
  19. Devers = addition by subtraction. I’m glad that his former teammates have really said nothing about the trade but every one of them saw and experienced a player who was not willing to do what was right to possibly make his team better. I’m guessing that right now they are all pretty happy with way things turned out.
  20. You mean that same Jim Rice who was in his prime one of the best right handed hitters of all time? The same guy who the Red Sox staff felt shouldn’t be giving a young player hitting advice? A healthy rice in ‘75 and we win the series.
  21. Big difference I think between a healthy Dobbins and Fitts. I’m hoping that a healthy Dobbins is going to be a major player next season.
  22. I never thought that I would ever like the between innings commercials until tonight.
  23. What do you mean give you a break? No one repeat no one is actively pushing for Grissom to be called up to play anywhere. When Mayer was injured it seemed kind of odd that Hamilton was called up I guess based on what he hasn’t done. Before you get excited yup I still see value in Hamilton. Also at the time of Mayer’s injury, Gonzalez was not playing much second base. Personally I’d leave Gonzalez right at second base and see how it works out. I know nothing about the hows and whys of the Red Sox when it comes to how they promote their players. II do know quite a bit about baseball and I do find some of their moves a little confusing. Obviously it is just me. I’m ok with that.
  24. There would be no reason to call him up if he isn’t performing the way they want want to see. I read al little bit about our prospects on line and do in fact rely on the box scores. Once again, I obviously don’t know his circumstances the way that you do.
  25. Don’t agree - obviously depends on the situation of course. If you are outperforming your teammates unless there are other circumstances, of course you deserve a shot. Obviously i don’t know this kid like you do.
