  1. When I was 11 (1962), playing, listening to, reading about, watching, and playing some more - baseball - that was it for me. It was really the only thing that I wanted to do. By the time '67 rolled around, sadly(wink wink) I had discovered the opposite sex and fortunately for me they had discovered me. I hung in there pretty well for that '67 season but after that, somewhat of a sporadic fan I became. That summer they did have some competition - not to mention some great stuff from the Beatles. It was a beginning and maybe even an end for me. Prior to 67, I didn't even think about where they were in the standings. It literally was all about next year. I just loved everything about the game. 67 represented a big change for me. Other things gained in importance and I started to sense that I wasn't going to get the call from the Sox anytime soon. that year and that particular season will forever represent special things for me. Some good - some bad. I have said this once or twice before but it is always nice to say it again. In all of my time, I have seen no player for the Red Sox have such an influence on a team as Yaz did in that year. It was a simpler time for me. No playoffs - you win your league on you go - you lose and home you go. Williams was the greatest hitter I ever saw but Captain Carl's 67 season has never been matched. The franchise changed in that season.
  2. Would like to see Brentz get one more chance. His power numbers are up - way up. Think he deserves one more shot.
  3. Just watched that little clip again. So many memories. I really had forgotten how fit and strong Yastrezemski had made himself. I also have just seen some highlights of Conigliaro's season before the beaning. If there has been a better young power hitting prospect in Fenway, i'm just not sure who it would have been. He had everything!!! a great tragedy. I was listening to it on the radio.
  4. What would a trade for a rent a third baseman accomplish for this team is the question that DD has to answer. My guess would be not much in the long run. Might make us feel better but if it doesn't provide the type of upgrade that will make this team significantly better in the short term, why do it? Trade no one for a rest of the year rental.
  5. Cliff Claven??? lol - I'm in Boston for the day and had to say that.
  6. Yup - you are right. Baseball is unlike the other major sports for me. I want a team that is competitive year after year. I want them to be in the hunt to make the playoffs but if they don't get a WS ring, I'm personally fine with that. They make up a big part of my summer's entertainment and just like the change of seasons I do want something to look forward to next year. 1. I am a traditionalist - i hate the current playoff system - too many teams make the playoffs - too much watered down talent -the season is too long. 2. I do not believe in the "window" theory. 3. I do not believe that the Red Sox ownership team feels the budget constraints that some here think they do. 4. When and if John Henry decides to sell this franchise, he will very much more than simply make up any money that he has to expend in luxury tax payments, foolish contracts, etc. 5. I still very much like the trade for Pomeranz 6. I would have my best overall hitter (defined by my terms) bat third 7. Outside of my closer, I probably would not have designated innings for designated pitchers. 8. In general, i don't like seeing many changes to a game that I have loved since 1956. I don't care if it appears sexy and appeals to a younger generation. I'm ok with some things not changing. 9. I think that statistical analysis is good for the game but should never be the tail wagging the dog. The guys on the field actually do know more about the game than many who seem to love the game but in fact have never really played it. 10. I am an older fan and I don't like change in general!!! lol Oh and by the way - nothing will ever top the 1967 season. Nothing.
  7. I think that you views are very reasonable here.
  8. We are on the same page. Throw in the fact that we are talking about a guy who was 27- 6'4 or 5 - is left handed and can throw it. I liked what the scouts said about Espinoza but I go with the bigger player just about all the time.
  9. Although i am a fan, i know that you don't mean me.
  10. Not from me! I liked the deal and still do. I did have some questions about his intensity level a little while ago not so much any more.
  11. I was a fan long before 1967 but I sure would like to get a copy of the documentary being broadcast Sunday night about that special season. It was absolutely magical. the whole concept of a tight pennant race. The idea that only one team wins a pennant and the brilliance of Yaz!!! That entire season will stand out as a life changer for me. Those of us who lived through it and saw are pretty fortunate. Yaz's catch in the third game of the season is imprinted in my mind's memory forever.
  12. I think that in the long run Durant gets his money from ownership some way. I believe what he did was bad for the league in general. I would have liked to been able to hear the conversation he had with ownership when they told him how they were going to make that money up to him. Maybe the IRS folks would have liked to have been there as well!
  13. Boy oh boy - I couldn't resist this! lol This guy keeps throwing like this, I think even the early Pom supporters (supporter?) will share in this meal. Good to see. A big young lefty getting better with every game. I liked seeing a little attitude from him when he was getting squeezed as well.
  14. I like that one!
  15. I do think that Lin has played well for us but I think that we have others that might do as well given the opportunity. I still think that a healthy Hernandez could be a very valuable player for us. Utility guys are important to have but we seem to stockpile them.
  16. Believe it or not - i respond to you.
  17. I don't think that Rozier is untouchable. I saw him play as well at Louisville. I really like what he brings. I just think that he like some others needs minutes. The Celtics have done a very good job under Coach Steven's leadership but the duplication at most positionns although giving some strength in depth, i think has restricted the development of some of our younger players. I like Rozier's quickness . Depth is important don't get me wrong but once you go past 8 or 9 players in the NBA you might actually have too much.
  18. ok well that is good then - I would just be one of those numbskull managers I guess. betts would likely hit third for me at this time.
  19. Haven't read anything today really but what I heard was that the talk still centered around one of Crowder, Bradley, and Smart. If it is Crowder, we still have plenty of depth. He might not be 10 or 12 deep but Brown needs to be able to play more. If Rozier stays, no problem really for me if either Bradley or Smart (not both are gone as well). I feel about the same way about Rozier as I do Brown. Kid needs minutes. My guess is that they will be a solid 9 to 11 deep before it starts and that is all they need. To date we have lost no draft picks. For me it is a great day to be a Celtic fan.
  20. but never third Max - really? so who does get to hit third - the team stiff? Still Betts for me I like what you posted.
  21. I would just like to see them be a little more creative out there with their dance. Maybe some clogging a little line dancing - how about my grad daughters doing their nay nay dance - whip it good. River Dance?
  22. Having some fun with Emp - that is all.
  23. No it really doesn't make it right but I'm not so sure that it would be in the same category of someone historically suggesting that the world is flat.
  24. The Hayward signing was a great sign by the Celtics. If the cost is Crowder and a few other complimentary players so be it. We might get a chance to see how good Brown can be. I hope they still find a way to keep Rozier but there is still plenty of depth, some of which is unnecessary, to get this team through. They got better. Heading in the right direction.
