  1. I hated seeing Longoria coming to the plate. We might have all over rated him for sure but if we have over rated Longoria, it says more about us than anything else. Outside of Sale and maybe Betts I guess, there really isn't one player on our current crop who I think that I would genuinely miss if they were not reupped when their contracts are up. It's the people who fret about cliffs and ******** windows who are doing the worrying not me. If we had to start from scratch, I think that I would be ok with it. In order for this group to move forward, they need some help from the outside for sure. I would not save one penny in an effort to hoard my loot so I would have enough to future sign many of these guys. They are ours so we cheer for them.
  2. second best what else other than catcher? got me there. Yes - I liked Geddy but I will give the nod to Varitek. Now if we had gotten a younger, healthier version of Elston Howard back in the day, Tek would be relegated to a bobblehead on the shelf for me.
  3. We will always be looking for the next Willie Mays I think.
  4. I really don't disagree with your take at all. Just a little disgruntled by a euphoric Yankee fan trying to give me a baseball education. Maybe the only different take I might have is that I just think that we need to add a power bat in general. I felt this way last year, I feel this way now, and if we don't add one, I will continue to feel the same way I guess.
  5. You know what I see here is that for all of this blow and bluster how the game is changing and it is different now than it used to be and that our opinions might be a little behind the times, there are many hypocrites among us. Looking at certain positions on a baseball diamond as being the positions that you must get your power from is age old. Time to wake up and move into this wonderful internet information accessible age before us. lol many times over!!!
  6. I'm sure that you are right here but looking at things realistically isn't always the same as tearing someone down. I know that you understand this. In my lifetime, I still consider Tek to be the second best in a Sox uniform that I have seen.
  7. I do have to add one more thing here that any person who has coached will identify with. When you look at any athlete no matter the level, you have to take in all of the traits and abilities that they bring to the table. And when it is all said and done, you have to really focus on their positive gifts. Work on the weaknesses but recognize and enphasize the strengths. JBJ to most represents one of the best center fielders in the game.
  8. Of course I think about his bat but when you ask me who is the best centerfielder in the game today, the only thing I think about is how that person plays his position. I do not think about his bat. If I am alone in thinking this fine - ok with that here. It is my opinion.
  9. I'm beginning to kind of like your opinionated way of looking at things maybe because I agree with you more often than not. Although I think that Varitek stabilized the catching position for us, I never considered him to be great by any means.
  10. With JBJ, I really don't even think about his bat. Got some power - very streaky - take what you get. When I read the many ways that people are trying to compare him to everybody else who plays centerfield, I chuckle to myself. You kind of have to accept him for what he is and I think that you are very hard pressed to find a better center fielder in the game today but that is just me and I really don't get too hung up in all of the statistical minutia that is out there. Much too much information for me. I'll also add that simply because I have been reading what other people have written about Martinez, I would not be surprised at all to find him being at least adequate for us in left field. He is likely not as bad out there as some are trying to convince us he is.
  11. 5 years is fine.
  12. Is Benintendi as bad as the metrics depict him to be? Watching him play, it is hard for me to buy the fact that he is not an average if not better ss. Granted there are others who really are substantially better but is he really as bad as some scream on here that he is? I don't think so. I do still think that any metric you can find that can help you with making any kind of decision can and should be used but blanket statements made on what certain stats seem to indicate is ridiculous. Many of us, like you and I, realize the importance of using what is available to help in the decision process but it won't change anyone's perspective of us or what we believe if we do not buy into the concept that advanced metrics is really the only way to go ultimately. We are old fashioned and grossly behind the times. Lastly, JBJ in centerfield gives us an edge over almost every team in mlb. He ain't bad!
  13. I got it and the point makes sense. I don't think that signing Martinez to a reasonably lengthed contract is going to be any kind of an issue. I will say that I am not as enamored with the members of this current team as some here are. There are very few on this current roster that I care enough about to offer them gobs of $ to reup. A couple, yes, but not many. I also truly believe that someday JH is going to sell this team and when he does, the profit he makes will make any budget that we have now or have going forward look paltry.
  14. What a finish - a simple little half-court trap on the sideline. Should absolutely never work right? Tell that to big ben when he throws the last pass of the game into the absolute middle of the field. It is about the mental!!!
  15. yankidyy do!
  16. We have a young star? Just kidding sort of. I like Betts, Benintendi, and Devers as much as the next guy but it is possible that we think that they are better than they actually are.
  17. They can't , they just can't stop worrying about the $. It is who they are. I'm with you though. I know little and could care less about the luxury tax.
  18. I was aware of it. The problem I see for many of us really though is that we tend to seriously overrate prospects that show any potential at all. Most of them just aren't that GD good when compared to what other teams have.
  19. They should get many good years from a 28 year old. How good? Who knows. It really is a guessing game with most of these guys. I really don't see him as being the best hitter in baseball. A powerful hitter for sure but also has a little injury track record. I remember the euphoria surrounding the Hanley signing. I was never quite so sure of that signing. His most productive years looked to be behind him and he had had to deal with various injuries as well. Only time will tell what becomes of Stanton. I'm really not big time disappointed that we did not sign him. We still need that bat though!
  20. Very likely true.
  21. Interesting points made.
  22. I just find it very encouraging that 6 of our top ten prospects are pitchers. Either our prospects just aren't very good or someone has seen the importance of developing our own pitchers these days.
  23. I would think that he could and we know that there are teams out there who want him.
  24. I don't know the names of the guys out there who could be targeted but I cannot help but think that JBJ with a few others kicked in, that we should be able to come away with someone decent. With that being said, i still don't really want to see JBJ go anywhere and there is still a good chance that he will stay put.
  25. Which is a legitimate risk when you have a fairly young guy who has missed as much game time as he has.
