To be fair, in Game 2 of this World Series, Snell was also cruising for 4.2 innings, and then failed to retire any of the next 4 hitters. Pitchers can seem to be cruising sometimes and suddenly lose it. I don't envy managers having to make those decisions.

Unfortunately it's not just the Rays who are all-in on analytics and 'creative pitching management'. Dave Roberts pulled Kershaw in Game 5 after he retired the first 2 hitters of the inning on 2 pitches! And the Dodgers won Game 6 and the World Series with a bullpen game in which they used 7 pitchers, including starting pitchers as an "opener" and as the closer! Yuck.

Yeah. Alex Speier's take was that pulling Snell was defensible, but replacing him with Anderson was not.

Also, the guy Cash brought in to replace Snell, Nick Anderson, had given up runs in his last 6 appearances. Make that 7. Another wow.

Cash is being excoriated for taking Snell out when he did. He didn't want Snell to face any Dodger hitters for a third time. But the top 4 in the Dodgers lineup were 0-8 with 7 K's. Wow. Dave Roberts, of course, also raised a lot of eyebrows when he pulled Kershaw after retiring the first 2 batters of the inning, on 2 pitches. These moves were pre-planned. Is this analytics gone mad?

1. Didn't want them to win, but the Dodgers are worthy champs. 2. Much better than Yankees winning. 3. We'll get our noses rubbed in it some more about Mookie, especially by the bozo writers, but that's the life of a sports fan.

Fine post, oldtimer. "Snell had handle Mookie and Seager like no other Rays pitcher", you said. That was what bothered me about the move. Mookie has been struggling against lefties in general, too.

And after Seager will be Bellinger. It just means that's it very difficult to keep a bunch of stars on your team. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Agreed, although the job needed to be finished, and it was done so in style. But I would say that the end of Game 7 of that ALCS was the greatest moment in franchise history. I love watching the end of that game and the guys in the dugout getting ready to run onto the field.

Based on this list, the contracts for pitchers probably worked out overall about as well as the ones for position players.

When I pointed out that the difference between Price and Betts was 2 years instead of the 4 you've been quoting, you dismissed it and deflected to the "But Price is a pitcher" argument.

Again, it would be 1 and 6 for Price, since he was 30 at the start of 2016.

I'm not surprised he wants full autonomy. I'm assuming guys like Epstein and Friedman have it.

So all pitchers are injury-prone. Maybe we should stay away from them altogether.
