  1. Thanks for the insights, maybe that explains why a bunch of us have been talking about his possible loss of bat speed...
  2. I have a ton of confidence that if JH tells Bloom he can spend up to the tax threshold or a little over every year, he'll do it...
  3. Last game he had a hit and two walks. I take my reasons for optimism where I can find 'em. Maybe he needs to get a little more patient and take more pitches.
  4. Good to hear. When I first read this, I thought your last sentence meant you had to go back there.
  5. Dalbec and Chavis each with another dinger today. They both have 6 in spring games.
  6. In general I would agree, and the big money is definitely part of it. There are exceptions in every sport too - guys who are just as tough and durable as the old time guys in spite of the money - LeBron, Tom Brady etc.
  7. Didn't mean to be, Larry. Just saying the "three outcomes" are home run, walk or K, not hit, walk or K.
  8. Hitters did sort of figure it out. Launch angle. The end result is, roughly the same number of runs scored, but a lot less balls in play.
  9. When you're Leon Russell you can do things like that.
  10. I don't know, I think some sports like football allow for clever strategy and the actual element of surprise. You can't really say that about defensive shifts in baseball. The big surprise would be if they weren't used.
  11. I think that in modern parlance the problem may be 'pitch recognition'.
  12. The thing about new strategies in baseball is that if they actually work, like defensive shifts, every other team quickly follows suit.
  13. Dave Roberts used the opener strategy more than once last postseason, and it nearly burned him. Fortunately for him the guys behind the lousy opener pitched great.
  14. It's a tricky issue. You can say the same about football - new rules to protect players from head injuries, for example. But when you read about all the ex-NFL players whose lives were basically ruined by head injuries, it's pretty hard not to get behind the new rules.
  15. Even though the book says you should have two of your best four hitters in the 4-5 spots? I'm not sure I buy it.
  16. I always get a chuckle at fans at home criticizing major league hitters for swinging at those low outside pitches.
  17. What you're saying is it's not 'third time through the order' that matters, it's only 'third time through the top of the order'. So facing the 4-5-6 hitters a third time is no big deal?
  18. No one seems to know for sure. But there's another theory that's quite the opposite - pitchers are throwing too hard at too young an age.
  19. On this point, I see no difference from using a regular starter and pulling him after 4-5.
  20. Okay, I'll drink to them being right.
  21. I certainly get what you're saying, but there are so many pitchers who end up needing Tommy John surgery now. I don't feel quite right calling them wusses.
  22. My concerns about JD are age-related and bat-speed-related.
  23. Is there any purpose to the opener play other than trying to screw up the other team's starting lineup strategy?
  24. I hate the freaking opener play. I'm delighted whenever it fails.
