    Of course. But Vaz has good catcher skills according to the metrics. If Sandy Leon's superior CERA was of as much value as you're suggesting, why is he a goner and Vaz still here? Does it mean the Red Sox are clueless about CERA value?

    Because you just used the identical argument I did about Kershaw: "the variances are too large to be chalked up to other factors". You shot that argument down with computer generated random samples.

    But no one has ever argued that clutch is based on a player's physical skill or ability. So if this is all 'clutch is not a repeatable skill' means, it's merely stating the obvious, and therefore tells us nothing. I think we all would agree that being an MLB pitcher or hitter involves a whole package of skills, some of them physical and some of them mental. The mental ones are obviously much more difficult to measure, but the fact they're difficult to measure obviously doesn't mean they don't exist.

    When the closing bell rang on deadline day, July 30, the Red Sox were 8.5 games ahead of the Yankees. Less than 3 weeks later they're tied.

    See, that's unfair, because I've been attempting to seek out large samples. The funny thing is that no one has said anything about the opening post numbers at all. But once you start talking about postseason numbers, the fur flies LOL

    I hear what you're saying, but last time out, Cora sent Houck out in the 6th to face the Rays' lineup the third time and they went single, homer, double. In today's game we had a 1 run lead, all our late inning guys ready to go. In my opinion it was clearly the correct move.

    Well, that's exactly right. It's always been that way. SPLINTER does not think Cora is a good manager at all, other than that players like him. But the amusing thing is, SPLINTER didn't think Francona or Farrell were good managers either. And yet those are the 3 guys who managed the team to their 4 rings in our lifetimes.

    moon, this is actually a lot like the CERA issue. Those numbers could mean something, or they could be random. But you tend to think they mean something. Kimmi thinks the lineup position comfort effect is real. Maybe it's all personal biases.
