"Repeatable skill" is somewhat problematic terminology, IMO. What does it mean? -
But even in peak years Cruz did not exceed 14.25 mill. The question is how much teams are willing to pay a DH now. Will there be a DH in the NL next year?

This is a very relevant comp. Like JD, Cruz has been posting a .900 OPS with regularity. And according to B-R, the highest salary he's ever made is slightly over $14 mill.

I think it's the nature of the game. Even the best teams lose 60-70 times, or 10-12 times a month. There's a lot of suffering over the course of a season. But some fans are certainly a lot more knee-jerky than others.

Wins lift the mood no matter who they come against. Getting Sale and Schwarber on the field is also nice. The Rays losing 2 out of 3 to the Twinkies doesn't hurt either. But it's an emotional roller coaster.

Yes, for most of this century the Red Sox have been near the top in payroll and always hovering around the tax line, except for 2018 and 2019 when they went over by a lot. Henry's ownership has been about everything you could ask for.

It has all worked out amazingly well, IMO. Bloom was the perfect guy to step into a situation like this. I'm a big fan of him, even though I was disappointed by the deadline inactivity. He probably did all the right things at the deadline too.

The fact that the Red Sox went all in for 2018-2019 and then decided to re-set has everything to do with the budget issues. You can chalk it up to ownership more so than DD. It was the strategy they chose.

The decision not to go over this year was obviously a very calculated one based on the assumption that this year was not the one to go all-in. Most of us figured the team at 85 wins or so. But who knows, if they had seen in the crystal ball that we'd be in first place on July 31, they might have spent more this offseason.

Something that gets overlooked about DD is that he's the guy who hired Cora. That was a huge plus for the future of the team in itself.

OK, well, that term "the cliff", which was used here countless times, is definitely one reason people push back. "The cliff" sounded like 3-4 years of bad teams/rebuilding. It sounded like Jax's wet dream. In reality, it was one pandemic-shortened season.

And with Whitlock, it was reported that a former Sox scout named Bob Hamelin was the one who did all the legwork and advocacy for taking him if at all possible.
