It's one of the confounding mysteries of baseball. If there's no such thing as momentum, how come the Yankees have been beating the Twins' heads in without fail for the last two decades or so? I'll compile the numbers, but first I have to make sure my stomach is fully settled, because I don't want to get sick on my keyboard.

The teams that have been winning it all since 2016 have had pretty hefty payrolls. And teams like Pittsburgh and Miami have no chance. The success stories of low-payroll teams are the Rays and the A's. And you have to respect what they've been doing, absolutely. It takes a lot of smarts to overcome the payroll deficiencies.

Based on the accounts I've read, he can still throw 96-97 when he wants. But whether out of caution or out of developing a new mix, his regular velocity is obviously lower. Maybe the new Chris Sale doesn't want to be the old Chris Sale, he wants to be an effective pitcher who can mix up speeds and not overtax his repaired arm.

1972 was my first heartbreak season with the Sox. I was listening on the radio when Luis Aparicio fell rounding third in Detroit. There were a few connections between that team and the late Seventies teams. Also, in 1974 the Red Sox had a nice lead at one time and collapsed late. That was the first year I went to Fenway. -
Yeah, we've been too busy moaning and groaning to appreciate that this guy is on the borderline of being a premier hitter.

The 1975-1978 seasons were like an epic tragedy. 1977 was also tough. We had a 5 game lead over the Yankees in June, and won 97 games.

As a man who lived through 1978 (barely) I can honestly say that this is nothing like 1978. This is disappointing. 1978 was devastating.

Yeah, Schwarber has a .500 OBP. But the offense in general was MIA in that Yankee series. It was a very demoralizing display at such a crucial time.

And sadly, it didn't pay off in any offense against the Yankees.

Big picture please. The Red Sox under Henry have had one of the highest payrolls year in and year out and have won 4 championships. Pretty unlikely they would have won any without some of the high priced talent we've had.

But it's no accident that the teams with the highest values are the Yankees, Dodgers and Red Sox.

You really know how to stay on point. I root for Bloom because he's our guy right now and I want him to succeed. I rooted for Theo, Ben and DD too, right up until they were gone.

Your overall premise is fine, but you got a little sloppy in the details. 1986 Hurst was better than 2007 Schilling. But of course, Schilling was a clutch, money, big game pitcher.

Yeah, but that statement is definitely a complaint. And you hear it a lot. Price was another one. The statement is usually based on a lack of reports of other teams in on the bidding. Fans assume that means there weren't any, and it gives them something to beef about.

Ax far as the identity part goes, Bill Lee said it was the Wall that formed the identity of a lot of those Sox teams of the past. Management would load up on RH power hitters to take advantage of the wall, and try to outslug other teams. It was a flawed strategy, obviously. I think you have to give a lot of credit to Theo Epstein for recognizing that the Red Sox needed to get much stronger in other areas.
