  1. A true but tangential point.
  2. The timing for this is great, huh? We just had to endure a 60 game season, and we're all still dealing with COVID. What a perfect time for another disruption!
  3. Yikes, that was a bad Mr. Magoo on my part. I read 'Pedro' instead of Nomar.
  4. Norm Charlton played a significant role in the Red Sox winning a couple of rings.
  5. I think it ended perfectly. With a ring on his finger and best wishes on his new contract.
  6. The law of averages says the M's will make the playoffs some year. They seem to be really trying now, at least.
  7. One thing I might need to put on my bucket list is to learn the rules of cricket. I'm not necessarily interested in watching in games, but it's kind of embarrassing not even knowing the rules. Hell, if this baseball season gets f**ed up, I might have to go all in on cricket.
  8. Holy crap, I didn't realize that. That's hilarious. When you look at how popular the game is in other countries, maybe some Charlie Finley type will try to introduce a streamlined North American version.
  9. Lester had a great career. And 3 rings to show for it.
  10. Beckett best fWAR seasons with Red Sox: 2007 5.7 2008 4.3 2009 4.2 2011 3.8 One great season and 3 good to very good seasons, I guess.
  11. I feel the same way as you two, but according to that article harmony posted, cricket has 5 times as many "followers" as baseball worldwide. We are obviously narrow-minded old North American men LOL
  12. Good point, Denny. If pace and play and lack of action were the big issues, football would be in at least as much trouble as baseball.
  13. Well, I learned something new today. Liverpool 4.1 billion (wow!) Red Sox 3.5 billion
  14. OK, players don't care, but who says fans do? Maybe guys like us on a baseball forum do, but Average Joe generally just wants to see their team spend more and get better. They don't care what the budget is or the luxury tax implications of a transaction.
  15. I think most players like to win, and then party. And even if they lose they'll probably still party. Could be wrong, but I think that coincides with a lot of fans.
  16. No one said they actually would be, but the idea was mentioned by Kimmi and you.
  17. Nobody wants to take a step backward. Nobody is going to cut ticket prices or salaries or anything else, unless it's an economic crisis on the level of The Great Depression.
  18. Well, that's an "interesting" idea. AFAIK, the main interests of the owners are: 1) To make huge amounts of money. 2) To experience the ego trip of being an owner. 3) To win games and championships. Only one out of three seems to coincide with the interests of the fans. And of course many owners don't care that much about winning.
  19. It wouldn't surprise me if Average Joe feels more resentment toward the players. Average Joe tends to say things like "if these guys weren't playing baseball, they'd be parking cars/digging ditches etc." Average Joe probably won't say that about John Henry. They might not like him, but they respect the fact he got rich with his investing smarts...
  20. Yep, it's a cultural myth.
  21. I'm sure you're right. I just threw that in for effect. Also, Canadians are always joking about American beer being weaker than theirs.
  22. People are nuts, because they go ahead and buy that beer no matter how expensive or how watered-down it is. That's the actual principle on which the sports and entertainment businesses thrive: people are nuts.
  23. I think Selig and Manfred are the worst of them. Some of the other guys had a few shreds of integrity, it seemed.
  24. I don't mean to be the grammar police, this is all just for amusement purposes. But I would suggest 'mitigate' as an improvement on 'partially negate'.
