Those Fangraphs dollar figures are actually a simple calculation. They figure out the average dollar cost of all free agents per WAR. If that number is $8 mill and the player has 3 WAR, the dollar value is $24 mill. It reflects the high price of free agents and the fact that a lot of them bust.
