Call it half empty if you want, just trying to be realistic. The big loss is Bogey. He was a 6 win player. Fangraphs calculates that 6 WAR costs you about $48 mill on the open market. I'm not trying to cut Bloom down with those comments, I'm just saying he has a very tough job assembling a contender even with that amount of cash.

If the Rays are willing to spend $40 mill on Eflin, that tells you everything about this market.

Sure. But what's the great significance of that? I started a thread about the most successful teams of this century which I thought revealed some interesting results. The Red Sox and Giants have the most titles while the Yankees and Dodgers have the best regular season records. So who wins? Everyone would have their own answer. I think you have to be looking at a 10 year window going back at least. But that's just me.

Being $100 million under the cap doesn't put Bloom in a wonderful position, though, because the only real dead money he lost was Price's $16 mill. Most of it comes from the expired contracts of JDM, Bogey, Eovaldi, Wacha and Hill, all of whom were contributors in varying degrees and have to be replaced. Plus guys like Devers and Verdugo will be getting arb raises. And prices for FA talent are exorbitant, as we're seeing. So he really has to hit his targets.

He's not a closer, no. And it is a lot of money, but prices are clearly inflated this offseason by a lot of money chasing a small pool of players.

His career advanced metrics are about average. No way he can be 22-26 unless it's eye test all the way.

"Beneath him" isn't how I'd put it. He wants to play SS and he's being up front about it. I'm guessing he also realizes it may cost him some money.

Understood. Though I can see the Sox or another team swearing up and down he'll be SS forever and then changing their minds after 3 years. What would he do, sue for breach of contract? I kind of doubt it.

It's all very arbitrary and random. If someone didn't have the genius idea of moving the Astros from the NL Central to the AL West, that would impact the numbers a bit too...
