Why does 2021 have to be called a fluke? And couldn't 2022 have been better if Bloom made better moves? You're basically bending things to fit your narrative.

Yeah, that's one of the things that doesn't make sense about this cliff. It was just a little cliff, I guess. Mountains out of molehills, as the saying goes.

So you're saying that it was predictable that the Sox would have a bad 60 games in 2020 and then bounce back and make the playoffs in 2021. OK...

2020 was just one of 5 last place finishes since 2012. We can't even call it an outlier.

2020 was a 60 game season in a global pandemic. If it had continued into 2021 then you might be able to call it a cliff. But it didn't.

The bottom line is, there was no cliff. There was just a valley that a bridge had to be built across. That's right folks, 2021 and 2022 have been Bridge Years.

The Astros won because they had great pitching start to finish in Games 4-6. So exactly the way they beat us in 2021.

What's interesting is that the postseason 2018 Red Sox had a pen that was a bit shaky, mainly because Kimbrel was way off his game. They relied largely on Brasier. Barnes and Kelly, and Cora plugging in his starters for an inning here and there. All of which allowed Kimbrel to hang onto games by his fingernails.

I think the issue is whether Cohen actively communicated with the Yankees to let them know he wouldn't be bidding on Judge, because he "values their relationship".

There's no magic formula, but the Astros sure seem to be the smartest guys in the room these days. Spotting talent, knowing when to let guys go, the whole package.

Or to look it at from another angle, baseball is a sport where a team can field what seems to be on paper identical teams two years in a row, like 2018 and 2019, and go from 108 wins to 84 wins, because of differences in performance by the same guys.

That's not really an opinion, it's a guess. And it could be true. OTOH maybe Bloom was waiting it out to get the best price (like DD with JDM), and that's why the signing came so late in the day.

Mookie, Xander and Raffy are all ownership calls, arguably. Certainly if we're calling Story an "ownership splash", it has to work both ways.
