While I agree that the Red Sox have been consistent spenders, I think it's been a while since they have set the market on anything. The biggest deal they have ever handed out is Price's 217 mill, which now falls well below some of the biggest contracts.

And it's not really that complicated, because having 5 positions makes it work out pretty neatly, i.e. a #3 of 5 is by definition dead average. #1 - 20-30% above average. #2 - 10-15% above average. #4 and #5 are reverse images of #1 and #2. Of course this is just what makes up an average rotation.

If you want to call 2020 a season. He had 52 PA's and then went on the IL for the duration.

Two years in a row Chaim has traded for outfielders who ended up getting a lot of playing time at lower than replacement level-Cordero and JBJ.

My complaint would be that Cordero came to the plate 411 times for us over two seasons and performed at lower than replacement level, with a cumulative fWAR of -1.0. That's where the real damage of the trade was inflicted.

Can we really say Bellinger is a low risk? First of all a few teams will be interested because of the dream of him regaining past form with the bat, so the price might be significant. And he might actually be done with the bat. Could be 2022 JBJ Redux.

Hugh, their offers topped out at $300 mill. We know that was below what he could get on the open market. It's not like he turned down $360 mill.

I see nothing there indicating he didn't want to stay in Boston for the right deal. One of these mentions the earlier $200 million extension offer that he said, on record, he came very close to accepting.

Here's the other scenario, which makes every bit as much sense, IMHO: 1) The Red Sox didn't want to pay above a certain amount, and they didn't think Mookie would accept that amount. 2) By trading him before 2020 they got some talent for him, and they removed a $27 million salary obligation and were able to get under the tax threshold by getting the Dodgers to also take on $15 million a year for Price.

What is the actual evidence that he didn't want to re-sign? From what I can tell it's all speculation. Mookie has never said anything that would even suggest it was the case.

It may have been a 100% mistaken foregone conclusion. It appears that the Sox made virtually zero effort to negotiate and find a middle ground.
