    It was also reported, mind you, that multiple other teams were in on Bogey with bids starting with 2. I somehow doubt that the Padres jumped the top offer from 162 to 280.

    Right, I already mentioned that theory. As far as Bloom looking shocked, all we have to go on there is the guy who reported it. Maybe it was like when you know someone is going to die, but it's still a shock when it happens...

    How do you think Bloom learned about it, then? I assume these guys are glued to their iPhones. Kind of makes sense.

    We won 78 last year. We've lost Bogaerts, JDM, Vazquez, Eovaldi, Wacha and Hill. That's a total of 13 fWAR gone. I think if the season started today we're looking at about 70 wins. Assuming they don't trade Devers. There has to be more coming.

    Losing Bogaerts the way we did has really soured me on the way our front office does business. The proverbial straw that broke the camel's back for me.

    My pet theory now is that the Sox hope Devers just says eff this and breaks off negotiations, so when he leaves they have a shot at making it look like they tried, the way they tried with Betts.

    The good news is, Bloom has promised to add a starter who provides upside, leadership and innings. Can anyone guess who he's talking about?

    Yes, I wonder about that too. If Bloom knew the Sox were out of the bidding, why would he be shocked. I will say this, having read the interview with Bloom, he does have the gift of gab that's required of baseball executives and politicians, the ability to say a lot without saying anything.

    I think moon is probably correct that the Sox never had any desire to retain Bogey and the later offer was just for show. It followed the pattern of what happened with Lester exactly, except that they fell even shorter with their bids.

    For a long time we've talked about the possibility of rich owners reaching into their own pockets to spend on the team, and I don't think we've really seen it happen. Until Steve Cohen.

    I hate to say it, but this rotation and depth has the potential to be truly abysmal. Adding Eovaldi, Kluber, Wacha, hell just about anyone who can pitch, would make me feel a little better.

    Everyone talks about the OBP, but his SLG the last two seasons was .559 and .557. He did seem to hit the ball pretty hard.

    After the signing of Senga for $75 mill, their projected 2023 payroll for tax purposes sits at around $344 million. That's $111 million over the first threshold. I saw an estimate that their luxury tax bill for 2023 will be over $100 million! Their 2024 commitments already project them to be over next year's threshold.* It'll be their third year over the tax, meaning even more penalties. And Steve Cohen, who's worth around $17 billion, just don't care. I saw someone suggest that Cohen is going to be the cause of a hard salary cap in the next CBA, which seems like a plausible theory. * Sorry, Hugh. You don't have to pay off our bet, because it was too much of a gimme.

    Pretty optimistic. You're predicting improvements for everyone in ERA, even though offense is supposedly getting a boost next year.

    The only that that's revealed, or confirmed, here about the Bogaerts signing is that the report that the Red Sox were making progress on a deal with him was total fiction. Some speculate it was used to drive up the price, but who the heck knows. We've already seen Heyman's faux pas about Judge being signed by the Giants, which was a bigger deal.

    I think it's also quite possible that Devers becomes disenchanted with the process of dealing with the Sox front office, and the state of the team, and just breaks off negotiations, knowing he's in line for a huge payday after 2023.
