  1. From Chad Finn: The Red Sox have signed quality players — closer Kenley Jansen and third baseman Justin Turner, and perhaps outfielder Masataka Yoshida will qualify — but those moves wouldn’t have moved the needle all that much even if the Red Sox had retained Bogaerts. And the fan base’s new, rational fear is that slugging third baseman Rafael Devers could be the next to go. Devers is the one remaining, healthy star. And that’s what is so mystifying about this from a media perspective. The Red Sox don’t really have anyone to market beyond Devers and maybe the unknown Yoshida to persuade fans to pay for NESN 360 subscriptions, or even just to tune in to watch the team on a nightly basis.
  2. Still a lot higher than the success rate of prospects...
  3. Here's a scary thought. What if the really rich owners (other than Henry) look at what Cohen is doing and decide they'd better keep spending their asses off the next 4 years until the current CBA expires, because there may be much worse penalties coming in the next one. What if Henry is using the right strategy but at the wrong time? Four More Years.
  4. Here's a truly terrifying stat from 2022: Red Sox pitchers had a collective ERA of 5.22 after the All-Star Break. And if you say it's because we had to use guys like Crawford, Winckowski and Seabold too much, well, as it stands, they're apparently an integral part of the plan for 2023.
  5. Let's not get totally fixated on HR's though. Bogey and JDM were #1 and #3 on the team in OBP, and #2 and #3 in SLG.
  6. But you might not like it if he returns to health and form with another team while we pay a big chunk of his salary.
  7. We're in no position to condemn the Yankees' management, I don't think. The Yankees are in a major drought championship-wise, but they make the playoffs every damn year, and they haven't finished below .500 since 1992. And they'll be one of the pre-season favorites to win it all this year.
  8. It's great to try to model yourself after a system that's working. But you still need to make smart decisions all along the way. Bloom has done a pretty good job with the farm, no question. But we don't know yet if he's capable of making all those smart decisions. So it's not like there's any certainty here. Dombrowski is indeed the virtual antithesis to Bloom. Dave goes for the prime cuts and pays top dollar. Now he has an owner who seems to really dig that approach. The Phillies made it to Game 6 of the Series this year, and added Trea Turner and some other pieces. He's an Old Schooler's dream. We'll see how it all plays out.
  9. moon, you are a true believer.
  10. I must say, though, that fans who pay a lot of money to go to the games are in a different position than fans like me who don't spend much at all on baseball anymore. I think they have more of a right to gripe about paying big money to watch a season like 2022. And the prices going up for 2023.
  11. 2020 was just Bizarro World. Remember we didn't have to pay Price that year either. Then again the team lost a pile of money regardless, of course.
  12. It's going to be all about run prevention, I think.
  13. Yoshida has averaged 26 HR per 150 games, so he does have some sock.
  14. Like I say, they need something to write about during the slow holiday season.
  15. moonslav and notin are trying to be the voices of reason, and I respect that. I'm just venting my spleen. I'm filled with doubt about the decisions that are being made, but Henry and Bloom are probably right on a number of them. I have to admit I'm fascinated by how the front office is going to handle it if 2023 really sucks.
  16. No we don't know everything, but I think it's fair to say that the Red Sox have drawn somewhat conservative lines on far they'll go to keep any player, whether it's Betts, Bogaerts or Devers. We'll see how their strategy plays out.
  17. Correct. The actual impact of the millionaire's tax for a Red Sox player is 2% of income above $1 million. The previous rate was 5%, now it's 9%, so the increase is 4%, * half a season played in Mass. So this will cost Kike Hernandez $200,000 on $10 million. That's the difference that needs to be made up.
  18. Sale's tax hit is $25.8 mill. Eating $20 mill a year of it would be colossally stupid.
  19. Well, this is a twist, other teams having reported interest that won't come to anything. MLB writers need something, anything to write about over the slow Christmas season.
  20. And over the last 2 years Verdugo has a total fWAR of 3.2, 1.6 avg., which makes him by definition a below average player.
  21. Yes, without Texas's favorable tax environment, who knows what they'd have had to pay for Seager, Semien and deGrom! They got all 3 for only $685 mill!
  22. They went the ballsy route with Mookie. Can't really say that's been a resounding success either!
  23. How can anyone doubt our coaching expertise after what we've done with those guys?
  24. And as we know, the Red Sox having an exemplary recent history of making substandard outfielders better fielders.
  25. A deadline trade of Devers might actually yield a better haul. But that plan runs the risk of the team being in the same position as last year.
