  1. No, we haven't heard conflicting reports about the 6/160 AT THE TIME thing with Xander. The reports have been very consistent.
  2. I didn't think we had any chance last July, no. But I can understand why the Sox FO didn't want to bail when they were only 3 games out of a Wild Card spot and had some guys coming back. Sometimes things go from hopeless to hopeful in a hurry...and vice versa.
  3. Simple facts: The Phillies came very close to missing the playoffs in 2022. Made it to 6th game of WS. The Red Sox came even closer to missing the playoffs in 2021. Made it to 6th game of ALCS.
  4. It's one of the craziest free agent deals ever, no question.
  5. Safer bets have never been made.
  6. Or, Paxton starts the year on the Phantom IL and is ready when needed.
  7. One thing that bothers me about the catching is, what the hell was up with McGuire's 6.33 CERA with us? I know it's a shaky stat, but when the number is that out of whack it makes you wonder what happened.
  8. Well, we keep talking about Boras, but the general feeling expressed by media has been that Xander was open to a Story-type deal or a little more AT THAT TIME. And that theory seems credible based on the first extension Xander agreed to. Once Xander reached free agency and we saw what guys were getting, the concept of any reasonable market value was gone. The bottom line is, IF they really wanted to keep him, they made a MASSIVE error letting him get to free agency. That's why I say it makes more sense they didn't want him back.
  9. $10 mill guarantee. Good signing, Chaim.
  10. The weird thing is, the theory that they never wanted him back at anything like "market value" makes the most sense, and makes them more like competent liars, rather than incompetent straight shooters...
  11. Well, whaddya know.
  12. There's a Crapshoot Factor. It's not pure crapshoot and it's not zero crapshoot. Most people like to simplify things, which in this case is just wrong.
  13. You're right, and yet the horrible truth is that Hill was #1 in fWAR, Wacha was #3, and Eovaldi was #7. That's the level of inadequacy we're dealing with here. That's why upgrades were needed.
  14. The Dodgers' 2022 Pythagorean record was 10 games better than the Astros'. What empirical data says the Astros were better?
  15. Well, it's all guessy games here.
  16. Why are you comparing the two? Apples and oranges.
  17. But 2016 Porcello was a fluke, so it's a meaningless hypothetical.
  18. Don't forget the if Sale!
  19. You're right, I'd gladly settle for innings...
  20. Not sure about Kluber's price tag. Eovaldi's deal is less than some of us thought, I believe. Most of the big spending is probably played out by now.
  21. They've been saying a lot of stuff. Still waiting for the starter with leadership, upside and innings.
  22. Unless they're punting 2023 and all they care about is clearing payroll.
