  1. Well, it's the Lester thing all over, because they did offer him the $160 but it was too little too late. But maybe on purpose. To me it looks like they decided to choose Devers over Bogaerts as the guy to build around. It's no slight on Bogaerts. He was a great Red Sox player. But the contract he got from the Padres is one of the craziest overpays yet. I think most of us figured he'd get $200 tops.
  2. I just don't think they were very motivated to retain him, because of his age, and the impact on future budgets.
  3. I'd say Henry wants to spend judiciusly. Can't really fault him for that.
  4. I don't know. But they did tack on 2 more years of control for Whitlock, so that's a start. We'll see what they do with Bello, Houck etc.
  5. I don't think there are actually many Yankee fans who think the injury to Rodon isn't a big deal. As for Cortes, he's pitched in as many spring games as Noah Song has...
  6. IL Funnyman strikes again!
  7. It's almost like the baseball gods are punishing the Yankees for not parting ways with Cash...
  8. Cashman's acquisitions since last year's trading deadline: Montas - injured Bader - injured Trivino - injured Effross - injured Rodon - injured Kahnle - injured
  9. Well, I hope we do get him back, that would be excellent.
  10. Song was interviewed last night, but there was not a word about when he expects to appear in a game. It has to be pretty soon...
  11. OK, forget the comparison with Paxton. The fact is that 2022 was the first time Rodon had put in a full season since 2016. One season doesn't put injury concerns to rest.
  12. What's wrong with since 2017? What time period would you use?
  13. Shocking that Jax is missing some of the factual information!
  14. You like the pizza boxes.
  15. It looks like they're pushing some of the other relievers to pitch more than 1 inning sometimes too (Bleier, Brasier).
  16. Yes, it's all part of the circus that is the beginning of the 2023 season.
  17. The mystery we're trying to unravel is why more pitchers seem to get injured even when they pitch a lot less. I'm pretty sure there's a simple scientific explanation, and it's more stress being placed on arms. And Tommy John surgeries are all about the exact same part of the arm getting damaged, right?
  18. That's our man!
  19. Don't you think there have to be physical differences in order for the ball to be thrown 10 MPH harder or more? I don't think there were any pitchers back then built like Aroldis Chapman.
  20. Something tells me Casas is a playah.
  21. For clarification, Clemens hit Piazza in the head in an earlier regular season game, not the WS game.
  22. On that 1980 team the 5 starters threw a combined total of 1257.33 innings. That's 5 pitchers, averaging 251.5 innings apiece.
  23. Velocity is one thing that's increased, spin rate is another. Didn't someone once blame the slider for the increase in injuries? As far as innings are concerned, Billy Martin's 1980 Oakland A's seem to have been kind of a Ground Zero for what we call "babying". Martin had a bunch of young starters and he had them throw a ton of innings, and those starters all had rather abbreviated careers.
  24. Plausible theory.
