  1. Full Waddle was a good one.
  2. I will say that the size of the offer to Yamamoto does suggest they're not totally yanking our chains, at least.
  3. No, they'll *just* be on the hook for the actual payments of 680 mill. This is not the first contract with big deferrals. Scherzer's contract with the Nats was officially 7 years and 210 mill, but the actual payments are 14 years at 15 mill. Ohtani's obviously blows all the others away, of course. I imagine this will be discussed in the next round of CBA negotiations.
  4. Personally I find "tax dodge" to be ******** terminology. If it's tax evasion (a very similar word to "dodging"), it's illegal, and you can go to jail for it. But if it's legal, then it's what most people would call "smart". Everyone has the right to minimize their tax liabilities by any legal means. I guess it is kind of comical that it's the Dodgers enabling this scheme, though...
  5. They're pretty careful about which rumors they publish. Pepen's credibility may be slightly in doubt. https://www.si.com/fannation/mlb/fastball/news/mlb-insider-marino-pepen-claims-boston-red-sox-have-made-monster-offer-to-yoshinobu-yamamoto
  6. Just another Interest Kings leak?
  7. He's only getting paid $2 million a year by the Dodgers for the next 10 years. You have to admit that's different, if nothing else... The source is his agent BTW. I'm not saying it's not a tad hyperbolic.
  8. That's encouraging, though sadly it may not be enough.
  9. It's all relative. Ohtani getting paid a mint was a given. He'd be called a fool if he wasn't.
  10. George Steinbrenneresque, that is. Cashman seems to have a virtual lifetime deal from Hal...
  11. Right on cue: Balelo described Ohtani’s decision as “the most incredible act of unselfishness and willingness to win that I’ve ever experienced in my life, or ever will. He did not care at all about the present value inflation. And you know what, neither did I. He should be praised for this. He did not want to handcuff a team with his salary. He said, ’How can I contribute to a team and allow them to stay competitive?’ So he took the most unselfish approach possible and deferred everything.”
  12. I wouldn't put it past Henry to fire Breslow after one year, either...
  13. Granted but many of the starting pitchers we talked about are off the board: Nola Gray E-Rod Lugo Wacha And frankly I thought the Sox were one of the most motivated, if not desperate, teams going into this offseason. I'm paranoid and I'm not doing much to hide it...
  14. Peter Gent said it like this in North Dallas Forty: "The team is a fiction."
  15. Also Wakefield had a sort of automatically renewing one-year contract with the Sox in his latter years, as I recall.
  16. Didn't you just answer your own question? The angry masses needed a sacrifice.
  17. The present value of his contract has been calculated as $435 to $460 mill ($460 is the number they're using for tax AAV). That's less than he was projected to get in a straightforward deal. Of course I realize that some folks think present value doesn't mean much...
  18. What worries me is that the committee thing has a lot to do with the problems of the Bloom era - the indecision and lack of aggressiveness. And maybe Bloom was just the fall guy for those problems. And maybe they're still going on... I'm worried, man!
  19. Manny Ramirez OTOH had a bit of a hissy fit when he found out about the two team options in his contract, as I recall...
  20. I think you have some confirmation bias going too. You downplay the exceptions. Nola is another one. He reportedly got bigger offers than the Phillies offer. Plus how do we know what these guys are thinking? If there are quotes, sure. But I don't think we should make assumptions.
  21. I'd say the bigger the star, the more they get to pick and choose where they play. Ohtani's deal gave the Dodgers a big break on the AAV and cash flow. And of course he got those amazing opt-out provisions revolving around who's running the team etc. It wasn't just the money for him, that should be pretty obvious.
  22. That's believable, the only thing that's missing is the family considerations thing. (Maybe basketball players don't care about those much.)
  23. Why? He's already met with all the teams, apparently. What's going to take up 2-3 more weeks?
  24. The money there is on "family considerations".
