  1. Nola re-signed with the Phillies when he reportedly had bigger offers.
  2. Because he's a redneck!
  3. Moto's reported response to Breslow: "Yeah, that's what they all say."
  4. Who knows? But that'd be crazy even for Cohen.
  5. Yes. So why did he choose the Dodgers? Better looking team and better looking organization, would be my guess.
  6. I really don't think it's going to come down to one team winning by outbidding the other by $5 mill. When the Yankees signed Cole, there were reportedly 3 teams who offered him 8 years @ $36. The Yankees won by making it 9 years @ $36. When the Cubs outbid the Sox for Lester, the teams had both reportedly offered $135 mill, and Theo won by jumping the bid to $155 mill. It's like you really have to establish that you are the one who will not be outbid by doing something extra crazy.
  7. I tend to agree. But I also think at the end of the day it's going to come down to where Moto really wants to play. The money is already way past the original projections.
  8. We're only talking degrees of absurd at this point.
  9. Things could get crazy, but I don't think Monty is getting $40M.
  10. Mets, Yankees Reportedly Holding Second Meetings With Yoshinobu Yamamoto
  11. Lou Merloni was the source for the Red Sox offer of $300 mill to Mookie and also Mookie's counter of $400 mill. Mookie says no $300 mill offer ever happened. Merloni hasn't said boo since Mookie said that, AFAIK. If Mookie was fibbing it's pretty strange that no one stepped up to contradict him.
  12. If the man was dead set on free agency, he wouldn't have taken that offer from the Dodgers, which has a pretty reasonable AAV of 29 million.
  13. Are there any actual quotes to that effect?
  14. Yes, folks do tend to oversimplify things a bit when it suits them...
  15. Every dollar spent by FSG does *ultimately* affect his wallet. He has a very large equity stake, after all.
  16. I'll take that bet, but only if payment is deferred until 2033.
  17. Yoshida is a Boras client too. If a team makes a big enough offer, Scott will advise his client to jump on it. He doesn't necessarily advocate the waiting game.
  18. You don't think any free agent signings qualify as "impulsive" or some other word connoting less than brilliant ideas?
  19. There's still impact. Ohtani's AAV is $46 mill. Not $70 mill, but still a fairly hefty number.
  20. It's been done though, right? Teams are always pivoting. The Jays might make a take it or leave it offer to Monty and if he declines, turn to Bellinger or re-signing Chapman or whatever. It's wacky stuff. Rich men being fought over by even richer men. Not necessarily rational or predictable.
  21. Agree on all counts.
  22. Right, but what's the incentive for the player to agree to the deferrals, is the question.
  23. Mostly agree, but one or two of the big spenders might give up on Moto and seize the moment to swoop on Snell or Monty with an offer they can't refuse.
  24. The player has to agree to it too. This was a perfect setup for Ohtani. He makes a ton off the field so he doesn't need a big paycheque from the Dodgers. Most players want the paycheques ASAP, I figure.
