It wasn't even a major overpay, really. Greinke got 6/206.5 right around the same time. Scherzer got 7/210 (with deferrals) the year before.

Actually if they sign Montgomery or Snell on a reasonable deal I think it will turn most people's opinions around to some degree. It would only reflect badly if the deal was a major overpay, but that seems like the remotest of possibilities.

If we insist on using the crazy numbering thing, he's a solid #2. What's interesting is that the Rangers won the 2023 World Series on the backs of #2's in Eovaldi and Monty, while their supposed #1s, deGrom and Scherzer, were of little use.

If the Sox had offered him what they eventually did offer too late, 6/162, I think that would have gotten it done.

If you take his whole career you've got 755 innings and a 14.2 fWAR. That's about 3.3 fWAR per 175 IP. Average is about 2 fWAR per 175 IP.

moon's numbers for 2021-22 say otherwise and appear to be 100% accurate. He was good in the abbreviated 2020 as well.

Personally I think it's mind-boggling that in Bloom's 4 seasons, the biggest contract we gave to a starting pitcher was $10 million. Not sure I'll ever get over that one.
