I'm not saying the trade made no sense. It makes sense that Sale was still a significant injury risk and it makes sense that Grissom was a prospect with significant potential. What still doesn't make sense is the team's overall approach to the rotation - thinking that removing Sale and adding Giolito was going to be enough. That did not make sense at all, in fact some might call it ridiculous, moronic etc. And since I actually think Breslow is a very smart and capable executive, my tendency is to believe it's the payroll budget that led to this moronic approach. And I believe the fact that they did nothing to replace their big addition when he quickly went down for the season strongly supports the cheap/moronic theory.

I probably should have explained this better before. With Sale, and also with Yoshida, you have a partially sunk cost or a sunk cost portion. The money is not strictly dead, because the player still has some value or potential value, but no one is going to pay their full salary for you in a trade. So your decisions are based on the amount you can recover vs. that potential value.

Not exactly. Their good run started in mid-June by taking 4 of 6 from the Phils and Yanks. And they took 2 of 3 from the Yanks the next time they played them. They took 2 of 3 from the Royals directly before the break. This team has been wildly inconsistent in just about every way, which is often the way it goes when you're a little better than a .500 team.

Yes, it’s already been costly. But if the team makes the playoffs they'll be able to say they did enough good things to overcome it. If they miss the playoffs by 1-3 games, they will not be able to say that.

And if the team misses the playoffs by a couple of games, the Sale for Giolito swap is really gonna look costly... (Sorry, I often can't resist the urge to start the day by being a s*** disturber.)

The 2024 team is still in a pretty strange place. FanGraphs gives us a 37.4% chance of making the playoffs. If they're right, there's a 62.6% chance we miss the playoffs for the third straight year. But we know that even if that happens, the team's mouthpieces are going to be selling 2024 as a success because we had some exciting player developments and we were semi-in-the-hunt for a while. And best of all, we did nothing stupid that would harm the golden future.

Yes he did, and that did take some guts, but it was also well after the fact of the 2017 championship.

I don't think you can say anyone was innocent there. You need a lot of people to stay quiet to pull off something like that.

That I totally understand. It's actually kind of amazing the Red Sox brought him back and have now extended him for big dough. Henry must really like him.
