  1. With regard to Oswalt's health, things have really taken a turn here toward pessimism. I would agree that there are concerns, but he did make all of his starts from August on. And he has been meeting with teams. I don't think the fact that no one has signed him means that everyone's been going over his medical records with him.
  2. The killer there, though, is the 40% LT. 10 million = 14 million.
  3. Absolutely true. A lot of long-term big-money contracts were in place coming into this year. But I think 'austerity' is a very relative term when they're spending at this level.
  4. Here is the link to Speier's numbers. It hasn't been updated since Jan. 26 but it doesn't take much work to bring it up to now. http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/alex-speier/2012/01/26/budget-isnt-problem-another-look-red-sox-payro
  5. User, it's a lock that the Sox are over the LT threshold. Alex Speier's numbers show we're going to be at least $190 million for LT purposes.
  6. A little crazy, isn't it.
  7. Actual testing and the example of Manny are two reasons I can think of.
  8. It's a valid question about Scutaro, no doubt. I don't think we're going to get an answer. In my opinion they set a budget ceiling (one which is above the LT threshold) and calculated that they would have to move Scutaro in order to sign Oswalt or whoever. But I agree that moving Scutaro could turn out to be an unwise decision for this year's team.
  9. When I think of Yankee overpays, I think of a lot more than a few million dollars total.
  10. Some hitters have continued to rake into their late thirties. It's certainly not the norm but there have been exceptions.
  11. So the answer to the question 'who was the last Sox player to go to arbitration?' will still be Rolando Arrojo.
  12. Plainly spoken.
  13. Thanks, and you're right about CP's pictures. I didn't bother saying anything there because the place was so out of control.
  14. Yes, I think there are 30 interleague games in 2013. That means a non-fielding DH is going to automatically miss 15 games, almost 10% of the schedule.
  15. That's a question that deserves a long discussion. Can a player's behaviour become a distraction and negatively affect the team? I would have to say yes. It's one of those intangibles nobody can measure though.
  16. Pedro became a diva later in his career with the Sox too Fred. Maybe it's a case of all the adulation getting to someone's head. Hopefully Ortiz will realize how well paid he is and focus on baseball.
  17. Pumpsie, take it easy on those animated pictures, please. I'm not trying to censor you on this, seriously, but I find them really distracting and hard on the eyes...they give me a headache.
  18. Yes, I know he said that. But it doesn't mean they hadn't been trying to add another starter or that they aren't still trying. What exactly are you reading into what he said?
  19. I believe Cherington said that because prospects of signing Oswalt or other targets at the price they wanted to weren't looking very good.
  20. I would say that they have clearly acknowledged that they have been looking to get another starting pitcher-at the right price. I see no misleading or confusion on that point.
  21. Muggah, man, you are in a certain category of fan that probably shouldn't even be described as a fan. I mean, you loathe and detest just about every single player and every member of management-as well as any other fan who supports the team verbally. To use an analogy, you're kind of like the guy who goes to see someone perform but instead of cheering, heckles the guy mercilessly and pokes fun at the people around him who are cheering. You paid your admission and you're there to see the show, but are you really a fan? I'm not convinced that you are.
  22. No big deal nick. Look at the Yankees brouhaha about Soriano last year and Cashman distancing himself from a move that was made from over his head. The good thing for Cash was that other people helping him with the deals freed up time for him to pursue new lady friends.
