  1. Hamels is a pipe dream anyway. He'll be looking for Cliff Lee money and someone will be willing to pay it. Won't be us. Henry is still licking his wounds from Dice-K, Lackey and Crawford. He's not about to open a fresh one.
  2. Except for DiceK's implosion, the pitching was excellent on this road trip and it netted us a 2-5 record. You're not going to win many games in which you score 2 runs.
  3. I don't think Hamels is a realistic possibility at all, not even as a free agent this offseason. I don't think this ownership will be in any hurry to take on another $20 million a year contract.
  4. I think Pumpsie's focus is on our W-L record. And to a certain extent I agree that you can't get around the W-L record. 42-39 is dismal, no matter what potential upgrades are on the horizon. We keep losing games we shouldn't be losing. Losing 4 of 6 to Seattle and Oakland is ridiculous.
  5. I keep reading about how our offense is fine and our pitching is our big problem. Yet on this current road trip we're not giving up many runs, but we're losing games. Everybody knows Fenway is a good hitter's park. But you have to really go into the numbers to see what an impact Fenway has. These are some simple numbers which I think show how much both our offensive numbers and pitching numbers are inflated by the Fenway Factor. American League average runs scored per game = 4.37 American League average ERA = 4.04 American League average WHIP = 1.31 Red Sox home average runs scored per game = 5.60 Red Sox road average runs scored per game = 4.46 Red Sox home average runs allowed per game = 4.95 Red Sox road average runs allowed per game = 3.85 Red Sox road ERA = 3.65 Red Sox road WHIP = 1.23
  6. That 9th inning for the Sox was a real horrorshow. First and second, no outs, Punto up to bunt...Nava should be coming to the plate with one out and runners at second and third, Pedroia behind him. Ooops...oh well, at least Nava is coming up with a runner at second. Ooops...Nava is walking back to the dugout without even having that chance.
  7. Looks like we're going against a kid named Griffin. He threw 6 shutout innings in Texas his last start.
  8. The clutch hitting was terrible, but Valentine did call for the bunt in the 9th, and Punto botched it.
  9. Probably done. He really iced the cake last night. It's a tossup between him and Bard for who had the ugliest exit from the scene this year.
  10. Interesting package of news there.
  11. Wow, Washington leaves Oswalt in to get totally pummelled.
  12. Looks like it's a good thing we didn't sign Oswalt. He's getting his head handed to him by Youk and the White Sox. He's given up 31 hits in 14 innings for the Rangers so far. Welcome to the AL.
  13. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Js5wBPGe3lc/SxN2448ZJVI/AAAAAAAAF-w/5GW_ZXlks-s/s1600/B03+003+Burl+Ives+-+Bath+-+Leo+Fuchs.jpg Thanks for the memories, Bob. Glad to hear you're doing well now.
  14. One interesting point on the Red Sox pitching: the team's road ERA is now 3.69, which is much lower than the league average ERA of 4.03. The Fenway Park Factors this year are 109/108, even higher than usual.
  15. The problem the first month of the season was the pitching. It has improved a lot since then. The offense has not been that great lately, such as on this road trip. Gonzo and Pedroia are having subpar seasons and we miss Ellsbury.
  16. The one game play ins were a terrible idea. Pure gimmickry, like the All Star Game deciding World Series home field advantage.
  17. Ha ha. If they win the next few games in a row you'll be back on board. You know, you don't have to keep 'taking a position' on whether we'll make the playoffs or not. It's not really necessary. The outcome will not be affected by your constantly changing viewpoint.
  18. Verlander has an ERA of about 5.5 in the postseason, and we beat him once already this year. There is your crapshoot in a nutshell.
