  1. Hey, Valentine thought he was good enough to be a #3 hitter. And good enough to pinch hit right in the middle of an at-bat.
  2. You're right, the team was beyond awful I've been reduced to arguing about small points.
  3. Nava's OPS before the All-Star break was .815 and after the break was .607. He actually performed better in the games that were more meaningful.
  4. This is exaggeration to the point of horseshit. If he's league average in OPS then it's wrong to say he can't hit and has no power. Those things are sort of factored into OPS. He had 6 home runs and 21 doubles in about half a season's AB's. As for his fielding, FanGraphs has him at a -1.5 per 150 games UZR, which is only slightly below average. They give his arm a + rating. He had 5 assists.
  5. Hey, having an ace would be great. The same way having another Manny/Ortiz combo would be great. But the fixation with having an ace is kind of silly IMO. Plenty of teams with Cy Young winners have missed the playoffs over the years. An ace can add a few wins to your record, no question. So can adding a good #2 and a good #3. Aces have become pretty damn expensive.
  6. So you agree with Chin Music that the average MLB hitter and fielder sucks.
  7. Oh, I would have bailed hard if Nava didn't have that little resurgence at the end.
  8. I guess you didn't notice that the free fall ended in September. In his last 10 starts he had a .894 OPS. Extended hot streaks and cold streaks are common for MLB hitters. Again, you're saying that average sucks. Just admit that.
  9. Nava ended the year with a .742 OPS and an OPS+100, so in effect he was a perfectly average offensive player. Compared to the average AL outfielder he was just a hair below average. His defensive stats also show him to be just a hair below average. So the stats support him as a viable reserve outfielder. Chin Music, what amuses me about your position that he sucks is that you're in effect saying that the average major league baseball player sucks.
  10. I would agree that the Jays' W-L record shouldn't necessarily be used as the measuring stick for Farrell. But to those who support him I would ask them to evaluate what they see as his strengths based on his 2 years with the Jays. And there are a couple of things that raise questions. -Why exactly do we have reports about him and Anthropolus not being on good terms? -More importantly, what happened to the Jays clubhouse? First we had Escobar and the absurd eye-black incident. Then we had Vizquel's strange outburst about the lack of discipline and teaching of young players. Hopefully the Sox FO won't just disregard these red flags.
  11. For me the Yankees clinching part is a minor footnote. I wouldn't have felt any better if we lost our final game 14-2 in KC. I was pissed about Bailey blowing the second game but after that, getting stomped in the last game was a foregone conclusion. All that matters is that we're in shambles but with a lot of opportunity to get better.
  12. The final ERA for this year's starting pitchers was 5.19. That's the highest ERA by Red Sox starting pitching in franchise history.
  13. I'm still pissed off about Bailey blowing the game last night. That was the final indignity of this brutal season. They weren't satisfied with how much pain they had already inflicted.
  14. The Red Sox front office should be very angry and embarrassed. If they're not, they need to be gone.
  15. The ace thing is overhyped. The A's and Orioles don't have an ace. The Rangers made it to the World Series twice in a row and should have won last year, without an ace.
  16. Not gonna happen Palodios. We've got Dice-K starting tomorrow. We had our chance tonight and Bailey puked it up.
  17. Bailey gift wraps the division title for the Yankees. Nice job Andrew.
  18. A lot of money, true. There have just been so many bad moves the last few years that it's hard to muster much confidence that they will suddenly start making a series of good moves.
  19. If they had signed Papelbon they wouldn't have traded Reddick and wouldn't have signed Ross. Ross has had an OK year but to keep him they're going to have to pay him a lot more than 3 million, and a lot more than Reddick will be making. This offsets a chunk of the money saved by letting Papelbon go.
  20. No f'ing kidding huh...this season has been one long exercise in humiliation. Personally I've pretty much reached the comfortably numb stage. I managed to survive the last part of the year only with the aid of bitter sarcasm and black humor.
  21. That's cold, man.
  22. It would only be fitting if Cody Ross tweaks a hammy or something before tomorrow night's game. Then we can field what will be officially the worst lineup in baseball history.
  23. I think Nava has probably been my favorite player on the team this year. And yes, I fully realize what a sad and crazy thing that is.
  24. 1-0 Yankems. This one might be ovah.
  25. I've argued that there isn't enough info yet to judge Cherington on. But I would agree that he hasn't proven much either. The signs are in place that we might be seeing a 'GM by committee' approach.
