  1. It would be weird if the Phillies make the playoffs after having a semi-fire sale. That would be a first, I believe. Anything can happen now in Bud Selig's Fun House.
  2. Watching Cook pitch is like watching Wakefield pitch. Both one-trick ponies, only difference is Cook's trick is the sinker. If he's got the sinker working just right he can do the job. If he doesn't it's bombs away. So you're holding your breath the whole time.
  3. That's nice, for their fans, but for me it highlights what I don't like about this new Wild Card. A team that's at .500 on Sept. 12 should be cooked. It's a smart business move by Selig to create more interest for more fans, but it's also a gimmick that over the years will result in some teams just a few games over .500 making the postseason with a chance to win it all.
  4. Funny how things look different from the outside. I thought Girardi was doing a pretty good job because the Yankees have had so many injuries.
  5. 'Zend Optimizer', right? Same thing happened to me.
  6. Man, both this forum and the Boston Globe one have been whacked lately. These message boards seem to be a rare example of regressing technology.
  7. True, but Duquette didn't make huge changes to the roster either. And Showalter will probably be Manager of the Year.
  8. By the same token, most of this year's Orioles team was inherited by Duquette. He's made good moves obviously, but his situation is similar to what Epstein's was coming into 2003.
  9. There's no denying that Duquette put a lot of the big pieces in place for the championships. But let's not get carried away here. In his last 3 years as GM Duquette had one of the biggest payrolls in baseball and the team missed the playoffs those years. Duquette's Red Sox won one playoff series in his 8 years. And he was acting like a nutcase toward the end of his tenure.
  10. You're right. The Twins should be ashamed of themselves for having a worse record than us. They were pretty good until last year.
  11. I think part of the reason there is less posting going on is that there is precious little to talk about when the team is so bad and so decimated and there are no moves that can be made until the season is over. That applies whether you're an optimist or a pessimist. It's the same thing on the Boston Globe forum. The game threads have all but vanished. Things should pick up again when the season is over and the offseason gets going.
  12. Sandberg might be a good pick.
  13. Umpires f*** up calls all the time. Instant replay would have fixed that one.
  14. Yes he does, but it's hard to judge how much of it is Farrell's fault. The Jays don't have great depth and they lost Bautista for the year, plus Lawrie and Arencibia for long stretches. Romero is having a terrible season. All the top managers have had losing seasons. On the other hand Farrell has never actually shown success as a manager. It looks like whoever we choose will be an unproven quantity. At least Farrell is well acquainted with the madness of Boston.
  15. Yep. Freak injury, the same type that took out Ellsbury this year.
  16. Did anybody recognize the guy who pitched the 9th for the Jays? Brandon Lyon pitched for the Sox in 2003. He was part of the infamous 'closer by committee' program that year, and had 9 saves.
  17. Good summary there, Juiced. One thing I'm wondering is if Tazawa can be a starter.
  18. Chapman now has 5 blown saves and 5 losses - Papelbon 4 blown saves and 6 losses. :harhar: (Just messin' with ya man. I need something to amuse me these days.)
  19. Well, I'd say we're on our way to either the #6 or #7 pick in this year's draft.
  20. I'm only following the game on Gameday, but it's showing that Carpenter was hitting 95-97 with his fastball.
  21. Facing this current edition of the Red Sox lineup is a pitcher's dream.
  22. Josh Beckett just retired Marco Scutaro on a popup to Adrian Gonzalez.
  23. You guys deserve a lot of credit for keeping a game thread going.
  24. I don't think losses are a very key stat for closers. Chapman has been totally lights-out but still has 4 losses. Some of those could be from getting put in tie games in the 9th inning or later, and maybe having to work a second inning.
