  1. The good news is, they did clean house financially in a big way with the Dodger trade. Now the question is, do Lucchino and Cherington have what it takes to make the right moves to build a strong team over the next couple of years. Some skepticism on that is certainly warranted. Personally I still have hope for Cherington. But he better not f*** up.
  2. Gonzo with the 2-run double in the 9th to lift the Dodgers to a 5-4 walkoff win.
  3. I'll go you one better. This team is going to suck again next year, guaranteed. There are no intelligent fixes that can rectify our roster for 2013. 2-3 years from now things should be a lot better, if our noble leaders do the right things.
  4. This month of September is going to be something to behold. Four more games on the west coast and after that we play the Yankees, Orioles, Rays and Jays. Wow. We might do well to win 5 or 6 games. The 2012 team was like a house in bad shape, and we were talking about what renovations needed to be done, when somebody slipped into the basement with a gas can and matches and set fire to it. Now we can't do anything but watch it burn to the ground.
  5. What's the over/under on RBI by ex-Red Sox players on the A's?
  6. Bronson Arroyo is in his 7th season for the Reds. He's one of the most durable starters in baseball, averaging about 210 innings per season with Cincy.
  7. Oh yeah, that'd be a re-do. I guess all of this is a sobering lesson in how not to build a team.
  8. 13 RBI for ex-Sox players...and the Coliseum isn't even a good hitter's park.
  9. And then of course there were the exciting starter tryouts for Bard and Aceves. And here we are on August 31 and both of them are totally f***ed up.
  10. So out of the dung heap of pitchers Ben collected in the offseason, one of them contributed, Padilla.
  11. Yes, I think that this trade with the Sox is going to wipe some of the smile off Magic's face.
  12. Let's see how far Tazawa can go. Time to have a look at him as a starter I would think.
  13. Another Sox starter digs a grave for the team in the first few innings.
  14. Sox are 62-70 coming into this game. I would take a rough stab at 10-20 in their last 30 to end up 72-90.
  15. To hell with it, Taz...these games are just advance preseason games for 2013. The Yankees lost to the O's tonight...only 2 games ahead of them now.
  16. Because most people don't expect us to make any big acquisitions this offseason.
  17. 11 million out of 271 million that will be spent (or maybe not spent) over a period of years is a pretty microscopic amount when you discount it to its present value. It's a speck of change that might stay in Henry/Lucchino's pockets anyway. I'd prefer the prospects. Thanks for giving me something to argue about though.
  18. Melancon had a 2.85 ERA in 92 innings in the NL. He has a 6.09 ERA in the AL. If they send this guy back to the NL and he stays there he might be able to have a career.
  19. The Dodgers had Punto lead off last night. For that little stratagem they got what they deserved. Punto went 0 for 4 with 2 K's and they got shut out.
  20. If Lackey rebounds well from TJ he could be a good value over the next 3 years. We owe him 30.5 million for those 3 years.
  21. A few things to keep in mind though: The Red Sox don't have any prospective 3-4 hitters in their system. David Ortiz will soon be gone. Acquiring good 3-4 hitter types cheaply is not going to be that easy.
  22. Good point. It's Mauer's low home run totals that surprise me.
  23. Mauer is a superior hitter for a catcher, but for a first baseman he'd be more like middle-of the-pack. For a big guy with a great-looking stroke, he has minimal home run power. He's hit a grand total of 20 HR over the last 3 seasons. He's only exceeded 13 HR once in his career.
