  1. Right. I think most people can understand why he didn't want to stay.
  2. He was force-fed a reassignment that was unacceptable to him.
  3. It's a fact, but I'm not sure how important it is. His position in the organization was going to be significantly changed, so much so that he resigned immediately.
  4. True. And I think the reason is that Hal Steinbrenner is very different from his father and has bought into the idea of having some patience and developing some players from within again.
  5. I don't think it's fair to pin Ben's demise on the impatience of Sox fans. I think any GM who leads one of the highest payroll teams in the sport to consecutive last place finishes is on very shaky ground. I think Cashman would be gone under those circumstances too. Maybe the real source of impatience here was the ownership. They are the ones who authorize all those big cheques. They don't like it when they spend that much on the payroll and they see the team out of contention early and the fans losing interest. No matter how good of a fan you are, there has been a lot of Sox baseball over the last two years that was not worth watching. And Sox fans pay the highest ticket prices in the game.
  6. Yeah, that one works for me too.
  7. It would be so cool if Vazquez could hit a little.
  8. They will be a lot of pundits' preseason pick to win it all next year.
  9. The only issue with Wright is that he's out of options so he can't be stashed.
  10. Arizona is taking quite a beating over how much they gave up for Miller. Keith Law called the cost 'comically high'. A guy at FanGraphs said it was the worst trade in history. I guess it shows the astronomical price of pitching.
  11. Last offseason drove me nuts. I'm enjoying this one a lot more.
  12. This is for you, Kimmi... @PeteAbe Of note: Jason Varitek was in the #RedSox suite as Dombrowski and Farrell spoke to reporters. He’s in the mix quite a bit.
  13. Elias may be destined for the bullpen.
  14. The Heathcliff trade came about because Seattle had a historically bad bullpen, blowing games left, right and center. Lou Piniella was on the verge of catastrophic psychosis.
  15. If we acquire another SP it'll be a trade. We're already at about 200 million for tax purposes.
  16. Carson Smith is the big catch. Nice addition to the bullpen.
  17. Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal Source: #Mariners making progress on trade for #RedSox’s Miley.
  18. I'm fairly optimistic about Porcello. Of course, the offseason lends itself to optimism bias.
  19. Maybe it's because I'm a bean-counter for a living, but I look at it differently. The extension was signed before Porcello had thrown a pitch for us, and before he threw a pitch he was on the books for 5 years and 95 million. That's the way I look at his contract. He had a bad first year but he can turn it around pretty quickly.
  20. 'Overpay' is such a commonly used word to describe baseball contracts these days that it's losing its meaning. In terms of degree of overpayment based on the player's WAR etc., how would you compare Price's contract to Lester's contract?
  21. nick, why are you spelling it Dumbrowski - not a fan?
  22. And not losing the draft pick has a value in the Price signing.
  23. And the fans pay for the Miller Lite. The money trail leads to the end users.
  24. The craziest part is that it's all paid for by the fans.
  25. I don't think the ERA+ averages tell the whole story with this group though. Buchholz and Masterson have been tremendously erratic. Masterson was coming off injury and serious decline in velocity. Buchholz and Kelly have had trouble staying healthy. There was a huge amount of X factor with this group, and it blew up.
