  1. That approach kind of sucked last year, you must admit. It was a rogues' gallery of stiffs. Again, our problem is that we're just not producing these guys internally. Papelbon, Tazawa, Bard - that's about it over the last decade.
  2. Most outrageous contracts for starting pitchers end up being bad contracts, too. I don't think it's such a bad thing having a closer who's good for a few seasons in a row. It worked well for the Yankees with Rivera. It worked well for us with Papelbon.
  3. With all that, he has a fWAR of 7.5 over the last 3 years. We all agree on his unreliability, but calling it a 'cult of Buchholz' is silly.
  4. I respectfully disagree. Koji and Tazawa ended last year on the DL. I love them both, but they could break down again at any time. I also don't think it's as easy as you say to get a closer who's as good as Kimbrel. Again I will mention the extreme difficulty Ben had in this regard, failing 3 times with Melancon, Bailey and Hanrahan. Theo also had a nasty one with Bobby Jenks.
  5. The consensus has been that exercising Buchholz's option was a no-brainer.
  6. I would not assume the tax threshold is an issue. I think John Henry is going Walter White.
  7. To me the message is that John Henry is all in on the 2016 season. He's had enough of this losing s*** just like us.
  8. The price was appalling, I won't argue that.
  9. There was a need for better pitching both in the rotation and the bullpen. Our major league team just got better, didn't it?
  10. It improves the 8th inning and the 7th inning too though. You do seem to be going out of your way to discredit the acquisition.
  11. Kelly seems to me like a lesser version of Buchholz-a total wild card. Last year he started off by pitching so badly they had to send him to the minors. When he came back he pitched much better, then ended the year on the DL. Giving him a tryout in the pen makes sense; counting on him to be able to close games seems like a shot in the dark.
  12. If we had been doing a better job of finding good relievers that way, this wouldn't have happened. I think there are different ways to get what you need, and no guaranteed formula either way. Signing the proven closer Foulke worked pretty well in '04. Cherington tried his darndest to acquire a proven closer for us - Melancon, Bailey, Hanrahan - before he finally had some good fortune with Koji.
  13. Do you think Koji is built for closer anymore?
  14. This post makes me feel good.
  15. But Greinke has the most mental health concerns. He'll likely be re-signing with the Dodgers.
  16. Scherzer's contract worked out to a present value of something like $27 million per year initially. So far it looks like a fair deal for them. But any team that trades for him will be looking at a higher present value AAV of course.
  17. I'll go with Cueto as well, and Carrasco by trade.
  18. I don't think they have any intention of moving either one. Those two are bona fide rising stars. The Red Sox do not need to trade them.
  19. I don't agree that it's irrelevant who wanted Pablo and Hanley. What you're leaving out is the failure of the remade pitching staff. I suspect that is what cost Ben his job.
  20. JBJ's August may have been a mirage, but we still don't really know what his MLB numbers will look like over the long haul. He had an .853 OPS at Pawtucket last year, so it's not a case of a guy doing nothing in the minors and then putting up big numbers in MLB. That scenario applies a lot more to Shaw then it does to JBJ.
  21. That would be a tad much.
  22. They will be enriched by their time spent in his presence, brief though it may be.
  23. Yes, I understand that. I was just asking if you thought a package like that might be enough for Carrasco.
  24. What do you think it would take for the Sox to get Carrasco? We were talking earlier about a package of Swihart, Bradley and Owens.
  25. It makes plenty of sense. But San Diego would likely want something more - a prospect or money.
