  1. My earliest Sox memories involve guys like Siebert and Culp, with Ken Coleman calling the games. Siebert had a no-hitter going one night and Fenway was rocking. This is how I became a Sox addict.
  2. For better or worse, Henry is the guy who controls this team. He's the one who replaced Ben with DD. He's the one who sets the budget. I think the fact he hired DD indicates he's very fed up with losing and isn't shy about spending. At the end of the day we're only along for the ride anyway. Might as well try to enjoy it and not worry about 2019 right now.
  3. The worst stretch for me was 1980-1985. The post-dismantling years.
  4. The worst examples of an entitled attitude among Sox fans that I have seen occurred during the years 2008-2011, when I saw constant abuse being heaped on management and players for one reason or another. That was before I joined this forum, so everyone here is off the hook.
  5. I think the only way you can do comparisons that make any sense at all is using W-L records.
  6. I much prefer being hated.
  7. From my perspective, there was nothing nice about being the loveable losers. It was decades of frustration.
  8. Losing Epstein was a blow. Whether he was fired or whether he jumped when he had the chance is another question.
  9. Signing Chen and Lackey over Price appeals to me too. But they won't be cheap either. And we'd lose our #12 pick.
  10. My guess, and it's only that, is that Cleveland wants Betts or Bogaerts as part of a deal for Carrasco. Cleveland reportedly wants some major-league ready offensive talent. They don't have to trade Carrasco or Salazar right now. Why would they want to do so for a package of players who are years away from helping, if at all?
  11. But what is long term success - forever? Can it really be done, with the way baseball is structured now - with much more money spread around and much more parity in the standings?
  12. Our problem is that we have been lousy at producing pitching, and acquiring good pitching by free agency or trade has become incredibly expensive. There's no way around it.
  13. They won the division 4 years in a row. That is a long run. The Red Sox have never even finished first twice in a row in the last century. I think Dombrowski's approach with Detroit was fine. He was trying to win championships. They didn't do it, but they made it to the ALCS 4 times and the WS twice. The only major difference between them and us is that we won the rings.
  14. Whoops, my bad. Goddam Baseball-Reference...his player page there says otherwise. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chenwe02.shtml
  15. Chen isn't a free agent though. And Chen and Lackey probably cost 20 million a year at free agent rates.
  16. The Verlander contract is not necessarily that bad yet either. He had a strong second half last year and even though his last 2 years were off-years he still had fWARs of 2.9 and 2.8.
  17. Yes, I agree. And they finished first 4 years in a row - something the Red Sox have never done in their history. I think Dombrowski is getting a bit of a bad rap with the whole 'win now' thing.
  18. I certainly disagreed with it.
  19. Scherzer's contract could end up bad too, no? All these big money deals are crazy risky.
  20. Avila has his work cut out, that's for sure. His first couple of moves seem to have been good ones.
  21. Personally I think Dombrowski did a pretty good job with the Tigers over the last decade. 86.4 wins per season, 5 playoff appearances, 4 trips to the ALCS and 2 pennants.
  22. That's the plain truth.
  23. If the two moves they make are the Kimbrel trade and the signing of Price, I don't think they are selling out the future of the team. They will have retained all the top prospects but Margot and Guerra, and not given up any draft picks.
  24. Tomase is right that the Red Sox organization has flipped-flopped with their 'philosophy'. Personally, I don't care. What does that really matter? There's no guaranteed way to success in MLB. There are a lot of teams in the hunt and a lot of money in the game. Every move you make carries risks.
  25. Maybe Tomase missed it, but the Red Sox did offer Lester 135 million, according to reports. Cherington had a pretty generous budget last year, IMO. They did manage to find a little over 400 million in the sock drawer for Castillo, Moncada, Hanley, Panda and Porcello. It seems kind of silly to suggest that Ben wasn't given any money to spend.
