There's an old saying that applies to Buchholz: his 'reputation precedes him.'
If another starter had Buchholz's 2015 season (113.1 innings of 3.26 ERA, totally legitimate season-ending injury), we would feel much more upbeat about them.
The only solution is for Hanley to hit like he's capable of. He does have a lifetime OPS of .861. We've got him out of left field. We have an opening at DH beginning in 2017.
Yes, I've decided to go optimistic on Hanley. Why not? It's over 4 months till there are real games again.
Seems to be some buzz about Greinke going to the Giants.
Totally FWIW but somebody wrote a piece about Greinke not being totally happy with the clubhouse situation in LA. The Dodgers are currently in the process of hiring a new manager of course.
Giants have plenty of money ready to shell out on a starter - remember they were all in on Lester last year.
Giants have a pretty good recent history of winning the ring.
All just thinking out loud for fun on my part.
A lot depends on the individual. Last year Lester was down to 3 teams - Cubs, Sox and Giants. He eliminated the Giants, much to their surprise, even though they were reportedly offering more than the Sox and were prepared to keep swinging with the Cubs.
Lester handled the situation like a rational human being. He knew he wanted to play for either the Cubs or the Sox for the next 6 years and he knew he was going to be paid an absurd amount of money in either case.
Price could easily end up in the same situation.
You're right about that, he's not a huge bargain at that price, and calling it a no-brainer is probably an overstatement. It was a move that made sense, that's really all it was.
The fact that it's only a one year commitment played into it. The Dodgers could be out $48 million on McCarthy.
Good pitchers are just incredibly expensive at this point in time. We ain't seen nothin' yet this offseason.
That approach kind of sucked last year, you must admit. It was a rogues' gallery of stiffs.
Again, our problem is that we're just not producing these guys internally. Papelbon, Tazawa, Bard - that's about it over the last decade.
