    I was just agreeing with Kimmi that the problem with MVP is the uncertain, subjective meaning of the 'Valuable' part.

    League average makes you a #3 pitcher by definition, and that's exactly what they needed. He averaged 6.42 innings per start - that's excellent by current standards. The 1.16 WHIP was excellent. His FIP was 3.79 which suggests he was a little unlucky. I guarantee you Ben Cherington was happy with the numbers.

    Peavy pitched fine in his regular season starts. Look at the innings, the ERA+ and the WHIP. He gave them just about exactly what they should have expected.

    Even if Peavy's numbers were a little worse than what we would have liked (and they were actually perfect #3 numbers), the reasoning behind the trade was rock-solid, and the attitude behind it was admirable, IMHO. He bolstered the staff and gave us some insurance. He gave us 6.4 innings per start and lightened the load for the bullpen. A deadline trade by a contender can't be expected to yield equal value. Look what Theo gave up for a few months from a closer.

    Nope, because notin is here now so the pro-Iggy trade numbers grew by one as well.

    Middy was injured, no? He actually finished the season fairly well that year when he came off the DL. (.805 OPS in August/September).

    Nobody wants to trade JBJ, I'm quite sure. The thinking is that to have any hope of obtaining a pitcher like Sale, we're going to have to give up some cheap controlled proven talent, and JBJ is the most likely candidate.

    JBJ had a hefty 5.3 WAR in 2016. WAR is your friend, Dewey.

    I don't disagree, except usually the term 'fraction of the cost' refers to something a bit less than 59% (13/22).

    The metrics aren't bullcrap. Iggy is the better defensive SS. Because of his offense Bogey had the better overall season with a 3.6 WAR to Iggy's 1.8.

    If it was me, that would be a real last resort. I would rather find some statistical tiebreaker than call it a draw and give it to the better-known guy. It's hard to imagine the stats being a perfect wash.

    The best players in baseball can add about 10 wins to their team's record. That still only makes a 65 win team a 75 win team. One guy alone can't work miracles.

    Maybe they thought we didn't need another 'true ace'. They already had one CYA winner, now they have two.

    Cabrera was fantastic that postseason.

    It was primarily the pitching that collapsed. The team scored 5.4 runs a game that September, but they gave up an incredible 6.4 runs per game.

    2008 was the year I realized exactly what 'range factor' was. For a while the left side of the infield consisted of two statues - Lugo and Lowell, who I think was playing with a bad hip. There was a very big hole between those two.

    I don't have a big problem with awards, but I'm cynical about them. I think the biggest purpose they serve is as a promotional tool for the game. I say that because there is often controversy about whether the award went to the right player. So you have some players feeling rewarded and others feeling ripped off.
