  1. The loss of Ortiz is the loss of 5 wins, all on the offensive side of the ball. That's not really so easy to make up. We may have improvements from some players, we may have regressions as well (Porcello, for example.) Dombrowski has his work cut out, honestly.
  2. Re-signing Ziegler would be nice.
  3. Right you are.
  4. I think what they will probably do is make one acquisition and throw stuff at the wall for the remainder.
  5. Like the one Wakefield had. Good thinking.
  6. I just read that the Red Sox reinstated Workman from the 60-day disabled list in November. I think that means there's still hope for his return.
  7. So we should keep him.
  8. OK, but I'm saying, why be concerned about the World Series inequity when the same inequity exists right from the opening round.
  9. OTOH if the series only goes 5 the home team gets one less day than the visiting team.
  10. You just explained why it wasn't 'fair' that Cleveland had home field advantage against us in the division series. Compared to that the World Series home field advantage is a smaller deal.
  11. Agreed, that attitude stinks.
  12. For Miley and Aro. Miley was coming off a 2.5 bWAR and was under control for 3 years quite cheaply.
  13. Sure it is. That applies to the other rounds of the playoffs too. The luck factor tends to even out, presumably.
  14. Yeah we're certainly not getting 2 quality relievers for Buch.
  15. Sorry buddy, but you're in a big-time minority there, I think.
  16. And what would you expect to have to give up for them? To get a guy like Duffy or Shoemaker you'd have to give up plenty. I thought those were exactly the kind of trades for pitching that you don't like (Pomeranz).
  17. It's certainly possible, but our lack of starting pitching depth would be a major problem.
  18. Welcome dgalehouse.
  19. I agree that the fiscal situation is tight. I don't think the new rules change things all that much for the Sox, because I don't think they were ever planning to send their payroll through the roof.
  20. Who can forget this one: 'Wake up, Ben!'
  21. The new CBA is not really that punitive. The basic threshold will increase from 195 million in 2017 to 210 million in 2020. You only really get whacked if you go 40 million over the threshold. So there's still plenty of money available to be spent.
  22. Going over the salary cap by up to 20 million is not any bigger of a deal than it was before. The really stiff penalties kick in when you go over the cap by 40 million or more.
  23. Some key points on the new luxury tax rules: Exceeding the threshold the first time - 20% tax Exceeding the threshold the second time - 30% tax Exceeding the threshold the third time - 50% tax Exceeding the threshold by 20 to 40 million - additional 12% tax on top of the above Exceeding the threshold by 40 million or more - tax rate is up to 90% AND the team's top draft pick falls by 10 spots
  24. I think what you might see is both Benintendi and JBJ sitting against some, but not all, lefties, with Young replacing them for those games.
