Yeah, I didn't mean to trash Benintendi. I love the kid. And he ended up helping us come back and win. I do think JBJ would have caught that. The main point is that sometimes the defense can have a big impact on what the pitcher's numbers end up looking like.

Pomeranz has had 2 starts. He pitched extremely well in one of them. Yesterday he would have fared better if Benintendi had made that catch.

Here's something about 'randomness': it is a huge factor in baseball, and it does explain a lot of things. But sometimes it turns out to be the wrong explanation for something too. We've seen it happen a number of times that a pitcher has a rough outing or two, and at first you think it was just a randomness thing, but then they examine him and find out he's got an injury and probably had it in those bad outings. 'Randomness' is kind of a one-size-fits-all explanation that gets applied to everything.

Here's my view on David Price: I don't think of him as choking in postseason games in the sense that he's scared out there on the mound. I do think he may be suffering from negative thinking in those games. It's a fundamental psychological principle that success breeds confidence and confidence breeds success, and the same holds for failure and negative thinking. When athletes hire sports psychologists, most of what they're trying to accomplish is to get rid of those demons of negative thinking.

'Tis true. He needed to get off to a good start. He's still got some time to turn things around but that time may be short before not just the fans, but team management, conclude that he's done.

You're glossing over an important difference. The majority of us 'pro-clutch' people believe that some players choke or are non-clutch. Do any of the 'anti-clutch' people believe that?

I think S5Dewey has stated that some players can take it to another level in clutch situations. I think he's the only one here who has taken that position.

Stop torturing yourself and us with this stuff LOL Maybe we'll finish last in 2021 and 2022. So be it. We survived 2014 and 2015. Maybe we'll have high draft picks and rebuild for a great team in 2023.

I would argue that if some guys choke, a lack of choking means plenty.

You're right about the squishiness, but since I do enjoy this stuff I'll tackle the two you brought up. 1) Reggie's HR in the playoff game was not as big as Dent's - the swing in the win probability stuff on Dent's was much larger. And Dent's brought in 3 runs. 2) Ortiz's HR in Game 7 was very big, once again because of the win probability stuff, and is one of the more overlooked of his big hits. There was also the 'intangible' value of it because we had just had a runner thrown out at the plate moments earlier.

Ben actually said at some point that he had strongly supported the signing of CC. He wasn't the GM at the time, I realize, but it didn't sound like it was a move Larry was shoving down everyone's throat. Also Larry was a key figure in the trade of CC to the Dodgers.

29.1 of Price's 66.2 postseason innings have come against Texas. He has given up 18 earned runs in those innings for an ERA of 5.52. What's weird is that Price has given up an identical 5.52 ERA against Texas in 75 regular season innings. Which raises another question - why does such a good pitcher have so much trouble with one particular team? We've seen it with other pitchers, like Tazawa's numbers against Toronto. The old adage is 'that team just has his number'. Maybe it's something psychological or maybe that team has figured out something about him tipping his pitches, who knows.

Sure, but then you've got David Price, one of the best pitchers in the game, with a 2-8 record and a 5.54 ERA in the postseason.

Some guys do play harder than others. It's pretty hard to tell if a hitter isn't going all out. You certainly see it in some fielding and base running efforts, though.

Yeah, this is why I like to look at postseason stats, even though I know it's a simplistic approach and the samples are relatively small.
