  1. JBJ has a 1.1 WAR. So he is a positive contributor in spite of the weak offensive numbers.
  2. Ha, that's way too much work. My point is that the manager does have a lot of these calls to make. In the old days they called it playing the percentages, and I believe that's still largely the case. In some cases the percentages may only be 55/45 in favor of a particular move. Nonetheless the manager has to have a rationale for each decision. He doesn't just change pitchers or use pinch hitters and pinch runners arbitrarily, does he.
  3. The fact that these are judgment calls doesn't mean there's no right or wrong.
  4. You can dare, but it's just one start.
  5. Bogaerts hit 21 homers last year, and his 2017 SLG is now up to .470. Don't be surprised if he ends up with 21 homers again this year.
  6. I respectfully disagree (and I don't give a damn about bunting). I think many baseball games do entail a fair number of impactful decisions. It's not so much about strategy as it is about NOT SCREWING UP. You do have to know when to pull the starting pitcher. In the modern game you do have to know the 3 or more relievers you're going to use after that and in what order. Baseball has one unique strategic element in that when you remove a player he's gone from that game forever. So you have to be careful about exactly when you use pinch hitters and pinch runners. Frankly I'm getting tired of all this diminishment of the importance of good in-game management.
  7. Maybe making good in-game decisions also has a positive impact on the clubhouse, by suggesting to the players that their manager isn't a complete nitwit.
  8. How many wins can a good clubhouse manager add?
  9. Kimbrel is pitching out of his mind these days.
  10. I could be wrong but you seem to have a pretty good record starting game threads.
  11. It really is hard to accept that there's no variance in relief pitching deployment. That would suggest that it's hogwash that Francona did a great job with his use of Andrew Miller last year. But we're told that the 'relief ace' concept has great merit. What are we supposed to believe?
  12. And we all know what the worst move/non-move of Torre's career was.
  13. Baseball is an amazing game. In the first 30 innings of the Oakland series we scored 10 runs. In the 21 innings since then we have scored 30 runs.
  14. I agree about the bunting, but I think last night's 7th inning actually gave a good illustration of moves and non-moves that can make a difference. The Texas manager left Dyson in far too long. Farrell used 2 pinch hitters and they both got hits. The combined effect was several runs.
  15. He tells it as it is, no question.
  16. 110% the right moves, trailing by 2 in the 7th with a chance for a big inning.
  17. Eck was crucifying him. It was great.
  18. Personally I don't think Kimbrel warming up with a 4 run lead is panicky. A 4 run lead in Fenway can vanish in about 5 minutes.
  19. Another is that many, many MLB players' performance can be really hard to predict with any accuracy.
  20. X-Bo must be the most dangerous hitter in baseball without one.
  21. He's kind of a mystery man, I've said that myself. Nonetheless it's the team's play and the W-L record that will determine his fate.
  22. We've had some beauties, that's for sure.
  23. Sam Travis Getting his first start against Texas - how perfect.
