It seems that Bogaerts has been playing with an injured right hand and that's probably a big part of the recent slump. Now he's having an MRI on it. Ugh.
I've been combing through the MLB offensive standings and it's pretty hard to find any neat correlations.
One number that stands out for me is OPS+ and ours is 96...pretty much the definition of mediocrity.
OPS is one of the craziest stats ever coined, just taking two other stats and mashing them together. It produces some bizarre results - a .600 OPS stinks. But it can still be useful as long as you realize what you're looking at. The same pretty much holds true with WAR.
You're a very level-leaded person and I truly respect that, but I think our offensive numbers reflect a little more than a rough patch. This offense has struggled most of the season, with a few periodic outbursts.
In the AL the Sox are 3rd in OBP, 11th in SLG and 7th in runs per game. So it seems like the SLG is roughly as much a drag on scoring as OBP is a boost.
Oh, I think it's an issue. They've played a few more games than other teams on average. They're 7th in the A.L. in runs per game, .01 ahead of the Rays, who play in a pitcher's park.
The fact is our offense is perfectly mediocre, middle of the pack.
8 out of the last 10 games we've scored 3 runs or less. And we're back to the middle of the pack in runs scored per game. Our high OBP is offset by our dismal SLG, I'm afraid.
