Yeah, it has changed. But it isn't really changing radically. You would still like your starting pitcher to be able to go at least 6 innings. I don't think any manager gets excited about the idea of the starter being pulled after 5 and having to use the pen for 4 innings every game.

A mental lapse at the end of a 16-3 game doesn't bother me much.

My question is why would anyone want to try radically reconfiguring how pitching staffs are utilized. The current model works quite well most of the time.

Some of these things are pretty easy to check out and you don't have to be a stat whiz, you just have to know how to use Baseball-Reference and have some free time. I think what you will find is that there's no consistent pattern whatsoever in how the World Series champs were playing at the end of the season.

It's pure conjecture that he's injured. He might just be losing bat speed due to age.

It certainly looks like they have to 'unvest' him next year. Stupid, stupid vesting option. I understand that it was put in there as a further incentive for him to sign. But we can see how it's already kind of hanging over the team as something else they have to deal with.

I like Hanley, and I root for him to do well. But I think it was a bad signing value-wise for several reasons: 1) Very erratic offensive numbers over previous 5 years. 2) Injury history. 3) Didn't really have a position for him.

The big advantage of having a closer or setup guy pitch only a single inning, though, is that he can do it 3 games in a row, or more in a playoff series.

To me it all comes down to run-scoring stats across baseball. In recent years run-scoring was dropping and dropping, suggesting that pitching was dominating the game. It has gone back up again, and a lot of people including me are wondering if that's because the ball is juiced.

He was averaging 17.8 coming into this game.

That's somewhere between highly debatable and total hogwash. Pomeranz has been getting to 6 innings most of the time lately. And even if he only gives you 5.1 like last time out, that's just 2 more outs you have to get from the pen. And if it's the second game of a PO series the next day is an off day so you can ask more from the pen.

All I'm saying is that there are reasons for pitch counts and yes they are a combination of health concerns and monetary concerns. Billy Martin had a lot to do with this, I think, when in 1980 he took a good young pitching rotation and burnt them all to the ground.

I doubt that Moreland will be back. But he is delivering good value for $5.5 million this year.

'Pampering' - now there's a word that clearly implies treating them like babies. I get a lot of this old school stuff, I really do. But the high frequency of injuries to pitchers is a fact. Torn ligaments are a fact. It's understandable that teams would like to avoid them. And nobody really knows exactly why the incidence of TJ surgery-inducing injuries is so high now. There are a lot of theories, as with many things.

What was really strange about Hanley's contract was that a lot of people were expecting him to get even more.
