I'm starting to think that if we have to give up any good prospects for Stanton we should just forget it and sign JD Martinez. I'd prefer Stanton but I'd rather we just took his whole contract and gave only a second-rate prospect or two. Of course it all depends what other teams are offering.

Fun stuff to think about but I don't see any way it can work in reality. In this proposal Pedroia is giving up $28 million, not taking into account the present value of money factor which would be millions more. Plus the 28 year contract would be kind of an eye-raiser for MLB - the connection between the 2 things happening is just too obvious.

You might be able to do that-if Pedroia was prepared to give up $46 million. (The second $10 million isn't even guaranteed.)

You wouldn't really be fooling anybody with an arrangement like that. I imagine MLB would conduct a little investigation of some sort and would do something quite nasty about it, deeming it a blatant attempt to circumvent the luxury tax rules. The Sox would be penalized and thoroughly embarrassed as would-be cheats.

I agree that Pedroia just might be the guy who would be prepared to give back the money. But he shouldn't do it. It's 4 years. He signed 2 team-friendly deals. If his career is over it's because of injuries he suffered playing the game. It's his money.

He was breezing, and that was part of the reason I was okay with it at the time. I thought it might even be a good thing for Sale's confidence to have such a dominating performance.

Sure it would be dumb. We did see Ryan Dempster give back 13 million to the team in 2014, but it was different because it had nothing to do with injury, it was for personal reasons. (700hitter will check in soon and remind us again what an idiot Dempster was for doing this. )

In general I defended Farrell's use of Sale. But the complaints about Farrell using Sale for 8 innings and 111 pitches in the September 20 game where he reached 300 K's may well be justified, especially when viewed with the wonderful clarity of hindsight. Farrell could easily have removed Sale after 6 innings in that one. Sale pitching like crap in the next 2 games doesn't help Farrell's case.

Papi bellyached about his contracts a couple times, I think. But in the big picture, and considering his contributions to the team, he was no trouble at all in that department.

The team could actually just break even every year and Henry would still be popping champagne corks, because the market value of his asset keeps ascending into the heavens. I mean, the sad sack Marlins sold for 1.2 billion freaking dollars.

John Henry certainly doesn't look at things exactly the way we do. But he doesn't want to lose money and he doesn't want to be a financial idiot with his baseball team. At the same time he's very very interested in fielding teams that can compete for the ring. That's good for the customers, and I imagine there's a pretty sweet kick in holding that trophy. Not many people get to do that, not even the other billionaires. PS I'm basically just jibber-jabbering...not much else happening right now.

I was quite surprised by the relatively small increases in luxury tax thresholds and some of the additional tax threshold-related penalties in the last agreement. It's almost like the owners did a great job convincing the players that the revenue bubble was just about to burst.

In terms of playing the games, sure they would. On the other hand if you're someone like JBJ or Xander you might also recognize that the team's ability to give you the extension offer you were hoping for may have just disappeared...

Although there are also cases where it's just not realistic for a team to improve, because of impending losses of players to free agency, injuries, financial constraints etc. Also, let us never forget - it's a zero sum game. If some teams are improving it means some teams have to be getting worse.

You won't find many good comps to this. Maybe when A-Rod was up for grabs after 2003 with 7 years left on his megadeal? A-Rod was actually an even bigger commodity than Stanton at the time. We almost traded Manny and Lester for him! Of course we tried to lower the amount of money due to him - as you may recall.

Stanton's contract is not a guaranteed albatross by current standards, but it's obviously out of reach for all but a handful of teams.
