Yeah, this about sums it up. I resent Boras and what he stands for and I probably look for things to knock him for, I have to admit. Over the years there were a few times I thought he was headed for a fall. But he's still standing and still doing much better than anyone else in his field. He's a shrewd individual, I would never contest that point.

I really can't believe DD would trade Bogaerts and Groome for Machado. It's not a question of whether that's a fair return for the O's or not. It would just be an awful move for us IMO.

Well, OK, if the writer was Boras's father he probably wouldn't be accusing him of being unethical due to conflict-of-interest. How much do you hate Boras? A lot, it sounds like.

As far as what pro athletes and entertainers make, it is what it is. But I do have a feeling that for MLB at least, a correction has to be coming at some point. Maybe MLB itself is headed for a...you know, one of those things it's not a good idea to fall off.

I agree with you, and I don't like Boras. It must be inferred, though, that whatever ethical infractions he has committed, he has not crossed the line into illegality, or we would know about it.

I think we did need Sale, yes. And he was arguably a great value acquisition because of his low AAV contract. We did paid a high price in prospects for him, certainly.

I understand that line of thinking. But it seems like whenever we've signed a guy who had any sort of character/personality issues attached to him, it hasn't worked out very well. Maybe it's because of that old adage about Boston being a tough place to play. But acquiring Machado would make me very nervous.

Larry Lucchino is hardly the only baseball executive who has had issues with Boras. If it was just Lucchino you might have a point.

Let's be clear though. The claims about Machado being a punk are mainly to do with some arguably dirty plays he has made.

Boras has a reputation of getting the most money for his clients, that's a little different from having an excellent reputation for being an ethical dealer. He seems to have done some questionable stuff over the years, based on the stories that have come out. The Johnny Damon negotiations being just one example. (The Red Sox claimed that Boras told them he would give them a chance to match the Yankees best offer, then didn't make the call.) But he has obviously done very well overall to be where he is today.

I won't argue about the overpaid part, that's probably fair. But I don't see how he overdid it on the pitching. You have said yourself that we still need another #2 type starter.

Scherzer would have been a better acquisition, obviously. Have to blame Henry on that one, I think.

When you don't have any pitching you have to get it from trades or free agency. Dombrowski did both and has been lambasted in some quarters for virtually every big-ticket move.

The Miami sale was actually $1.2 billion. That's what us accounting types call transposed numbers - they can be deadly. Still, $1.2 billion is an amazing amount for a crap franchise. But I have to ask, where does all the money keep coming from? If subscription TV viewership drops significantly, there's no way that doesn't start to push the needle in the other direction at some point. Revenue has to come from somewhere, the pockets of the fans.

Yankee Stadium has the crazy short porch in right, but it's deep in left and centre.

The bottom line is, there are a lot more doubles hit at Fenway than at other parks, on average. There are also fewer home runs hit at Fenway than average. The doubles increase is more pronounced than the home run reduction, and therefore it's a hitter's park in general. But the misconception has often been that it's a hitter's park because of balls going over the wall. It's actually all the balls that go off the wall.
