  1. How come you're using conventional numbers instead of WAR? Seems to me you were using WAR for Porcello.
  2. I don't know what you mean about Lester. Ben was the GM when they failed to sign him to an extension. Ben was the GM when they failed to sign him as a free agent. How would Ben, or the Sox FO, not be held accountable for what he's been doing since then?
  3. If that was true, Sandy wouldn't be around any more.
  4. Like I said - no one gets a free pass.
  5. Sandy must have heard you. He took Happ deep twice today.
  6. I disagree that Ben was handed a s*** team. But I'm about 99.9 per cent sure it was Lucchino that hired Valentine, and that move, along with the residual sourness from 2011, ensured that 2012 would be a disaster.
  7. Many fans will say that, sure. But Belichick has been questioned pretty sharply about some things as well, the most recent being the benching of Butler in the Super Bowl. No one gets a free pass.
  8. Results-wise, Ben's run as GM was totally bizarre. A world championship-fantastic. A 93-loss season and a 91-loss season (the most losses for a Red Sox team since 1965)-horrific.
  9. Dickey threw 190 innings with a 4.26 ERA last year. That's pretty damn good for a dumpster dive. I'm surprised he's still out there.
  10. Anibal Sanchez was released by the Twins. Add another to the list of possible dumpster dives. And 3 of them are former Red Sox!
  11. 3 years, 75 million for Arrieta.
  12. Interesting proposition, at least.
  13. notin, no offense, but what the hell are you talking about?
  14. I would have to think that holding out until June looks like a horrible option to most players. You're looking at missing about half the season. That's a sizable chunk of your career. And falling behind that far in live action time could screw up your whole season.
  15. It doesn't look like many want to hold out. It looks like most just want to play ball.
  16. I guess it's safe to say not even Theo saw this bargain basement situation developing. Otherwise he probably wouldn't have signed Chatwood for 3 years/38 million. He might have been able to re-sign Arrieta for that kind of money now.
  17. It is a crazy situation. I was just reading Peter Abraham's piece about Castillo in the Globe. Castillo's only hope of getting to the big leagues is to absolutely light it up in AAA to the point that other teams are convinced he's a real MLB player, maybe even a potential star. But even then his price tag (3 years, 35.5 million remaining) is a little hefty by this offseason's standards. For a trade partner you would probably need a team in contention with a desperate need for an outfielder.
  18. The five in five out principle might not work this year because most of the crappy teams decided to stay crappy or get even crappier.
  19. What are you saying-Castillo was an under-the-radar good signing?
  20. It was Wayne Huizenga who dismantled the 1997 team, and then sold it to John Henry after the 1998 season.
  21. Dombrowski left the Marlins in decent shape, considering that they won the World Series the year after he left. As for Detroit, they nearly made the playoffs in 2016, and they might have done so if the new GM had made a better signing than Jordan Zimmerman.
  22. I thought it was one-1997 with Florida. He went to Detroit in 2002. Or do you have me on a technicality somewhere?
