I don't even need to look it up to know his save conversion rate has been somewhere around 90%, which is excellent.

I'll say it again. These vesting options are the absolute worst thing you can put in a contract. Too much potential for exactly the kind of problems we've seen with this one.

They can trade HanRam within the next week. But any team trading for him would take on the vesting option so it seems unlikely.

He is when he's at the top of his game like he was in 2017. This year he hasn't been quite that good. Kelly actually looks better right now.

I don't know whether to believe that story or not. I think maybe they wanted to dress it up for the players union to avoid problems. But who knows?

It had all the makings of quickly becoming an awkward situation for Hanley, Cora and the whole team. The more I think about it, the more I think this was clearly the right move.

Good observation. And Bill Lee in one of his books talks about the narcotic cycle of alcohol and amphetamines. Players going out and getting drunk till all hours, waking up with hangovers, popping bennies to get their energy level back up. Lather, rinse, repeat.

So this Newcomb kid is listed at 6'5", 255 lb, and he's 5-1 with a 2.39 ERA. I would like to see Mookie and JD both take him deep in the first as a welcome to Fenway.

You're right. That 5 million doesn't count in the all-important luxury tax calculations though. For tax purposes Pablo is off the books after 2019.

Possibly because in theory balls and strikes aren't supposed to be subjective? I don't know. You have to admit that some of the baseball metrics have a lot of little nuances and issues. It doesn't surprise me that people get befuddled by some of it and want to stick with what's more familiar and supposedly simpler. -
Especially since we attributed his lousy 2015 and 2017 numbers to injury, and he was supposedly injury-free this season.

Hanley really has been an awful tease throughout his time here though. When his 2018 OPS dipped below his already-bad 2017 OPS, that kind of did it for me.
