  1. I just think there's a whole other side to the story, which is that Farrell bungled the whole thing. There's a right way and a wrong way to retaliate. The Sox did it the right way this year against the Yanks. They did it quickly and Kelly threw the beanball at around waist level. Last year the Sox delayed the response, they dicked around with it, Barnes threw at Machado's head - they f***ed it up completely.
  2. I'll ask you the same question I asked notin. Let's assume the option was the real reason they released him at this point. Should they have told the truth? (notin says they didn't have to give any reason at all.)
  3. Machado's next contract is just another albatross waiting to happen. A lot of Red Sox fans already dislike him. As a free agent bust he would be Public Enemy #1.
  4. Well, OK, let's just look at the FWAR's: 2014 3.8 2015 2.3 2017 1.9 Total 8.0 average 2.67 So what's your statement that he wasn't worth his money in those years based on? What do you calculate his value for those years as?
  5. I think 2004 should never be tainted by looking at it through the filter of stuff that's happened since.
  6. Wrong. FanGraphs says he was more than worth the money every year, including 2014, 2015 and 2017. You disagree with FanGraphs?
  7. Pedroia is a guy who has always given it 100% on the field. 2 championship seasons. Good O, total hustle and amazing defense. A few questionable moments shouldn't tear all that down.
  8. If 4 K's is a Golden Sombrero, what do we call 8 K's in one day? Wind Turbine?
  9. So does Schilling, but politics shouldn't matter IMO
  10. Truth with a touch of sarcasm: 'Hanley, thanks for taking our 88 million in return for one good half-season. Sorry we couldn't make it 110 million.'
  11. 2 duck boat parades though right?
  12. If they had been perfectly truthful they would have said it was the vesting option, sure. But presumably that could have possibly caused issues with the union. The real culprits here were the contract and Hanley's lousy numbers, neither of which DD or Cora had anything to do with.
  13. Who's got rose colored glasses about Devers? The complaints about this thread were because it was started by a Yankee fan. And as I pointed out to him, he never starts threads like this about Yankee players.
  14. It's hard to say how much of a hit it took though. If Hanley is only a .700 OPS guy now that's not too difficult to replace. And the vesting option was a huge complicating factor IMO. I was on board with Hanley at the start but he was so bad in May that he brought this situation on himself IMO.
  15. How does a low level prospect replace Espinoza, a high level prospect when he was dealt? You speak in riddles.
  16. My take on the Pedroia situation has admittedly been influenced by Peter Abraham's comments. He placed most of the blame on Farrell for bungling the whole thing. To me that might be one more reason why Butterfield would feel uncomfortable saying anything about it.
  17. But Dewey, don't you think Butterfield might be a pretty good buddy of Farrell's?
  18. Um, you said we were going to get our clocks cleaned by Houston this weekend. You're a classic goalpost-mover. Keep it up though, you are somewhat entertaining.
  19. Yes indeed. I'm one that's happy to let Cora and DD make those decisions for us.
  20. Personally I think you're way overgeneralizing. The knock on Red Sox teams of the 70's in particular was that they relied too much on the long ball, remember? The 1978 team had 74 stolen bases. The 2018 team has 45 already. But I'm not denying that we've seen a huge trend toward going for the long ball the last couple of years, which there are numerous theories for such as the prevalence of shifts.
  21. Damon is a tool. But I can't forget 6 RBI in the most important win in franchise history.
  22. Jackso is living proof that your theory is correct alright.
  23. A 6-1 lead and Porcello's pitch count was still pretty low. He was probably planning to cover the rest of the outs with Barnes and Kimbrel. If this is what we have to criticize Cora for he's doing pretty good.
  24. I'm not sure things have gone downhill that much. I will always remember how bad our bench was in the fateful year of 1978. Jack Brohamer, Frank Duffy and the immortal Bob Bailey. If we had a guy like Brock Holt that year might have turned out differently.
  25. Butterfield's allegiance may have been with Farrell. They were together in Toronto and Boston. He's not what I would call an objective party in this.
