But in the specific case of JDM, he's an ideal candidate for DH, a great hitter who provides no value on the run prevention side. I would argue that he was indeed 'shielded' from playing the outfield.

There's some chatter about the Yankees signing Machado and trading Andujar for pitching. Makes sense.

Ortiz had some high finishes, he was 2nd in '05. Personally I understand why it's hard for a DH to win and don't really disagree.

No, but it does happen. A-Rod himself was willing to have his contract cut by a fair chunk of money to come to Boston. We all know the rest of that story. When Lester was in the final stages of negotiation he told the Giants they were out, even though they were apparently quite prepared to try to outbid the Cubs and Sox.

It's worth noting that there are some potential perks for playing with a winner. Admittedly they may not be large enough to swing the balance. But Pearce should get about $450K or so in postseason money. He also got a new truck, a bunch of cash for autographing memorabilia, and probably some other handouts for doing ads, appearances and such. Yes, I know, the truck ain't happening but once.

Full marks for effort. But I'm not sure if that helps the cause or not. Pitchers have always been handicapped in the MVP award because they only help on the run prevention side. It's a mismatched competition, really. What chance does the best relief pitcher in baseball have? I know one of them did win it-Willie Hernandez in 1984. But he pitched 140 innings.

Since a DH is not helping you at all on the run prevention side, don't they HAVE to be penalized when comparing them to a two-way player?

Just quibbling here, but it could be argued that the really sexy move before the 2011 season was trading for A-Gon. That was the one that got everyone excited because he represented the big power bat. And no one ever really questions that this was Theo's move. I think the Crawford signing was more surprising than it was sexy. And Crawford was supposedly a much more complete player than A-Gon. IMO the reason the Crawford signing gets picked on more than the A-Gon trade is simply that it was a more obvious bust.

Before answering that, how do Massachusetts state income taxes compare to Maryland's? Just kidding. I agree with you. I think there are instances where the player will take a little less money for a better overall gig.

He seems to have become a lousy outfielder. Maybe he's just a glorified DH. And as a hitter he's a pale shadow of J D Martinez. And J D Martinez only got 110 million. The only thing Harper offers vs. J D Martinez is youth. (Looks like I'm in the mood for trashing Harper today. )
