    The rewards for that achievement are pretty slim.

    What do you call it when you realize without a doubt that you're just not good enough to play in the majors? I would imagine the response varies a lot from one individual to the other. Some can accept it and play in the minors or move on to making a living some other way. For some I would think it's pretty tough.

    Most of whom will have their hopes and dreams shattered...that's what I'm saying. It's all relative, really. Guys like Trout and Mookie obviously have all the confidence in the world. But the further down the totem pole you go, the more of a struggle it is.

    Yeah, I suppose you can be a powerhouse even though you haven't won the division since way back in 2012.

    On the other hand, many MLB careers are very short. If you include the whole population of guys who play even a few MLB games, obviously a lot of them have had their confidence to play at the highest level destroyed.

    I think so too. It may not be a huge difference, but any difference counts.

    It may have something to do with having such a fresh example in Pedroia.

    Fair point. Eovaldi did have the 22.1 postseason innings with a 1.61 ERA and .81 WHIP though. He's a speculative play, that's for sure.

    He also had a 2.2 fWAR in 111 innings. That's pretty good.

    That's true. I was thinking more in terms of payroll.

    I would view Eovaldi as replacing Porcello after 2019.

    Eovaldi's regular season fWAR this year was 2.2, BTW. It's not like he was bad during the season and only good in the postseason.

    $60 million for a starter is not really 'big money' any more. It's medium money at most.

    Well, he's only 28, and obviously he's been derailed by injury at least as much as inconsistency.

    I would say trying to fix second base is actually a minor concern. We got through 2018 pretty well with our motley crew of second-sackers.

    It's not really a minor concern when you're talking about a 26 year old who is potentially one of the all time greats.

    Personally I think you guys are wrong and that we do sign Eovaldi.

    The arb raises must be virtually equal to the 22 million subtracted for HanRam. Think how bad it would look if that option vested.

    ??? I thought the idea of JD playing first was all about him doing it in NL parks, so Moreland would be sitting instead of Benintendi.

    Right, but cutting payroll is cutting payroll. It's a whole separate thing from the tax saving on the re-set.
