  1. David Ortiz might be cited as a player who could have made significantly more money if he had chosen to hit the open market.
  2. It's worth noting that there are some potential perks for playing with a winner. Admittedly they may not be large enough to swing the balance. But Pearce should get about $450K or so in postseason money. He also got a new truck, a bunch of cash for autographing memorabilia, and probably some other handouts for doing ads, appearances and such. Yes, I know, the truck ain't happening but once.
  3. Full marks for effort. But I'm not sure if that helps the cause or not. Pitchers have always been handicapped in the MVP award because they only help on the run prevention side. It's a mismatched competition, really. What chance does the best relief pitcher in baseball have? I know one of them did win it-Willie Hernandez in 1984. But he pitched 140 innings.
  4. Since a DH is not helping you at all on the run prevention side, don't they HAVE to be penalized when comparing them to a two-way player?
  5. And the reports on the trade with LA indicate Lucchino was heavily involved in it. http://www.espn.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/8323305/boston-red-sox-los-angeles-dodgers-blockbuster-trade-anatomy
  6. Just quibbling here, but it could be argued that the really sexy move before the 2011 season was trading for A-Gon. That was the one that got everyone excited because he represented the big power bat. And no one ever really questions that this was Theo's move. I think the Crawford signing was more surprising than it was sexy. And Crawford was supposedly a much more complete player than A-Gon. IMO the reason the Crawford signing gets picked on more than the A-Gon trade is simply that it was a more obvious bust.
  7. OK here goes Bryce Harper OPS 2018 Overall 889 2 outs RISP 1234 Late & close 733 2017 Overall 1008 2 outs RISP 1159 Late & close 973 Career Overall 900 2 outs RISP 858 Late & close 781
  8. Statmeisters call these non-repeatable skills (can't do it every year). What do their 2017 or career numbers in the same situations look like?
  9. Still on the topic of Harper, it's being reported that the Nats had a deadline deal in place to move him to the Astros for prospects, but ownership nixed it.
  10. Before answering that, how do Massachusetts state income taxes compare to Maryland's? Just kidding. I agree with you. I think there are instances where the player will take a little less money for a better overall gig.
  11. He seems to have become a lousy outfielder. Maybe he's just a glorified DH. And as a hitter he's a pale shadow of J D Martinez. And J D Martinez only got 110 million. The only thing Harper offers vs. J D Martinez is youth. (Looks like I'm in the mood for trashing Harper today. )
  12. I'd say the chances are less than zero. We already have a fairly talented right fielder named Betts we might need to open the wallet for.
  13. Moreland got 2 and 13, so it's not really a big stretch.
  14. Now you're getting a little too creative LOL We needed JD going into this season. We're going to need him again to make a run in 2019.
  15. I see your crystal ball is still in fine working order. You should have a thread where you predict all the free agent signings MLBTR style.
  16. What's the difference between BC not resisting Pablo and Theo not resisting Crawford? Crawford was an even more expensive bust, in fact.
  17. Seriously, Gray has never been an ace. His highest fWAR was 3.8. In 900 innings his fWAR is 13.7. That's 2.74 per 180 innings. Very respectable but far from an ace.
  18. But who would want to acquire such a choker at the trade deadline?
  19. Call it ironic or whatever you want, but with the Cubs Theo has sort of replicated the Lackey and Crawford signings with Darvish and Heyward.
  20. But in those Red Sox pics you certainly wouldn't call him a fatso.
  21. Sure, there's some truth in this. But I can't believe the truth is as simple as Lucchino being this dummy who somehow forced everyone else into these ill-advised moves.
  22. Lucchino was not purely a marketing guy. He became kind of a convenient target to blame for signings like Crawford and Sandoval, it seems, even though we have no real evidence that this was the case. Show me something, anything that supports this.
  23. I certainly don't disagree with your point about Mookie. You're just talking about making a sound economic decision. There's a vast difference between that and what James actually said, which was that 'there are no players who are underpaid' and 'they're all replaceable'. Apparently some of this stemmed from him getting tired of hearing about players making several million a year being referred to as underpaid. I know that when I say some player is underpaid, I mean in relation to other players, not to the general public. I think that's what most people mean when they say that. Suggesting that all the players could retire and be replaced and it wouldn't make any difference, that's just stupid. I don't understand why he would even go there.
  24. I like Wright, but he has enormous difficulty staying on the field.
